Dorian D’Angelo and Richard Brounstein walked down the aisle on November 14! The pair exchanged vows before a sea captain at the Yale Club, on a gorgeous fall day . . . Cary Gunther and James Miller stood under the chuppah on December 4 at the St. Regis. Mazal tov to our newly wedded Flyers!
Joe Jones and Sungwon Hwang are planning to wed! The speedy pair met when Sungwon joined a 20-mile training run led by Joe. The couple was profiled in the NYRR magazine, New York Runner, this summer. Best wishes to Joe, Sungwon and their families!
Three former Flyers are new mothers! Congratulations to Christina Cellini and husband Mike Organek on the birth of Natalie Marie Oganek on November 24, to Ariella Evenzahav and Randy Stone on the births of twins Ezra and Max Zahav-Stone on November 28, and to Nicole Cely Bartfeld and Ben Bartfeld on the birth of Samuel Alon Bartfeld on December 8!
Most of us know Tony Squire as that crazy athlete who is up for anything: the Race Across America cycling competition? Check. Empire State Building Run-up? Check. Manhattan Island Marathon Swim? Check. Tony has also competed in countless Ironmen, road races, and other events. Turns out Tony also had a day job, as a leading cardiologist at Mt. Sinai. Tony recently retired. In his honor, Mt. Sinai has established the Anthony Squire, MD Endowed Scholarship Fund.
Matt Boyland received the 2010 Bertha Franklin Feder Award for "Outstanding Service in Librarianship" at the New York Public Library. Matt is a senior reference librarian at NYPL with nearly 10 years of experience serving the public. Matt alone was selected from among the NYPL’s 2,500 staff members for this honor. NYPL patrons, from children to ordinary New Yorkers to Pulitzer prize winner Stacy Schiff, universally praised Matt for his scholarship and willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty.
Congratulations, Tony and Matt, for these richly-deserved honors!
We mourn the passing of Ben Seiver on November 28, 2010. Ben was an avid Flyer from 1994 until his 2002 move to Tokyo. He never lost his high-school love of the track. He regularly trekked up to the Armory for the Thursday Night at the Races track meets, where he ran everything from the 400 to the 2-miler to the Flyer 10 x 5 x 200 relay. Perhaps Ben’s most unique contribution to the team was the “birthday loop”. Each year, on his birthday, Ben would run the 6-mile loop in exactly the number of minutes which corresponded to his new age. Many other Flyers have since taken up the challenge. We will miss you, Ben.
