This issue's theme is "Summer is here" and
Coach's Corner,
FootNotes, Healthy Eating
and Advice from Papa Bear all reflect that.
Additionally, Brian Hsia takes the microphone from Glen Wiener and we get to hear from his
corner of the executive board. By year's end we hope to hear from every member of the board.
In this issue's feature section we present the second part of Scott Cohen's article
on getting into triathlons. And for a form and philisophical approach to running, Flyer Joel Matalon expands on his recent presentation
on Chi Running.
On May 30th, the 85th running of the renowned Comrades Marathon was held in South Africa.
Scott Cohen ran the race and has written a moving story on the preparation and running of this race.
Elle Green,
who accompanied Scott to South Africa, has supplied an engaging story about the journey and the once-in-a-lifetime experiences and memories that she
brought back.
We all love Central Park, "Our Park", and spend many hours — in fact, many years — using and
enjoying it's varied features. It is nothing less than a world-class gem. But it needs help, and depends heavily on volunteer effort and
volunteer giving. The New York Flyers have made volunteering a regular event (complete with homemade cookies), sometimes gardening, sometimes
weeding and sometimes cleanup.
Heather Marcellis, the organizer of the effort, tells us a little about what we have done and what you can do.
In this section, we learn a little bit more about some of our members. In this issue
we feature Robert Butler, a Flyer for over 15 years and professional photographer. Bob has run every thing up through marathons (where he has
finished in the low 3's) and is a triathlete as well.
And in case you missed it, we published a member profile for June (Nina Parks-Taylor) between the last newsletter and
this one. Check it out.
In this issue we spotlight The Bronx.
Susan Snyder writes about all the myriad training opportunities on both the roads and in the parks, and
Papa Bear — with some help from the organizers from the VCTC — tells about 3 "small town" races that might attract your interest.
