Bronx 10M

It’s always party time in the Boogie Down Bronx! Who doesn’t love a race that takes runners to the gentle inclines of the Grand Concourse and its elegant Art Deco buildings? No wonder 139 Flyers showed up for the 2025 running of the Bronx 10 Miles. They were among 13,104 finishers, the largest field in this beloved race since 2017.

Summer will not be officially over for another week and, unsurprisingly, the weather was on the warm side this morning: it was 74F with a 60% humidity. Many runners had to adjust their expectations. Before the start of the race, I spoke to Amanda Schachter, as she was warming up for the race, and she told me about an interesting methodology she has developed to predict her race performance. Apparently, her mind shapes her perception of a course before a race. Sometimes the road before her looks uphill, sometimes downhill. This morning it looked uphill. I spoke to her again shortly after the race. I asked her if her methodology had proven correct.

“I knew I was in for an uphill battle!” Amanda replied. “The heat got to me today so I really felt the general upwards tilt of the course to mile 4 and it winded me, unlike last year when I barely felt the incline. It was still a great day. Here’s to hoping that Harlem Hill looks flat to me next week for the 18-mile training run, my next race.”

As you’ll see below in the results section of this report, notwithstanding her uphill battle, Amanda did a great race today and was one of the team’s top 5 runners!

Warm weather or not, 2 Flyers made the podium of their age groups in the Bronx: Brad Goz and Teresa Gancayco both won bronze. Furthermore, this was the 8th race in the 2025 NYRR Club Points Series, and 3 of our age-division teams also won team awards: the 60+ and 70+ Women Teams, and the 70+ Men Teams. More details below. Congrats to the award winners, and to all our amazing finishers!

And here are the team’s full results:

Kristel McKanna led the women's team with a superlative time of 1:15:29 (pace 7:33, AGP 76.26%). Kristel was also first in the Flyers 40+ and 50+ Women Teams. Katie Wilson-Milne finished in 1:15:55 (pace 7:36). Katie was also second in the Flyers 40+ Women Team. Siobhan Stack was third in the team with a time of 1:16:31 (pace 7:40). Amanda Schachter finished fourth for the team in 1:16:35 (pace 7:40, AGP 76.07%). Arlyn was also third in the Flyers 50+ Women Team. The Open Women Team came in 24th and is still 3rd in the Open B club standings. With 3 races left to go, will our women succeed in closing the gap with the team in second place, and move back up to the Open A Division?

As noted above, Teresa Gancayco was a podium finisher (1:40:31, pace 10:04, 74%), winning bronze, and was also first in the Flyers 50+ Women Team.

Also in the women’s team, Denise Iannizzotto (1:21:28, pace 8:09, 5th AG place, AGP 80.2%) was first in the Flyers 60+ Women Team, Florence Clarke (1:22:02, pace 8:13, 6th AG place, AGP 78.58%) was second in that team, Nina Parks (1:34:34, pace 9:29, 6th AG place, AGP 73.04%) was third in that same team, while Christy Putnam (1:42:15, pace 10:14, 4th AG place, AGP 75.06%) was second in the Flyers 70+ Women Team, and Barbara Paer (1:51:28, pace 11:09, 6th AG place) was third in that same team. To be noted, Florence is running Berlin in a week!

Jeff Gurwin led the men’s team with the inspiring time of 1:06:27 (pace 6:39). Jeff was also first in the Flyers 40+ Men Team. Greg Flood finished second with a remarkable time of 1:07:26 (pace 6:45, AGP 72.3%). Greg was also second in the 40+ Men Team. Clément Bernard was third for the team (1:09:05, pace 6:55, 9th AG place, AGP 81.69%). Clément was also third in the Flyers 40+ Men Team, and first in the 50+ Men Team and 60+. He was followed, in fourth place, by Luís Gonzalez (1:09:43, pace 6:59) and, in fifth place Francesco Presutti (1:10:02, pace 7:01, 10th AG place, AGP 79.81%). Francesco was also second in the Flyers 50+ and 60+ Men Teams. The Open Men Team placed 51th, and is now 9th in the Open B club standings.

As mentioned above, we had one Flyer male on the podium, Brad Goz (1:23:11, pace 8:19, AGP 72.91%), who won bronze, and was also first in the Flyers 70+ Men Team.

Also in the men’s team, Yacine Amrani (1:10:12, pace 7:02, AGP 71.27%) was third in the Flyers 50+ Men Team, Clay Bracken (1:14:31, pace 7:28, AGP 74.26%) was third in the Flyers 60+ Men Team, David Gaines (1:31:53, pace 9:12, 6th AG place) was second in the Flyers 70+ Men Team, and Stephen Moore (1:33:19, pace 9:20, 8th AG place) was third in that same team.

Moving on to our team performance, 3 age-division teams were on the podium:

- The 60+ Women Team, led by Denise, and including Florence and Nina, won gold. The team is still second in in the club standings, but is closing the gap with its main competitors;
- The 70+ Women Team, led by Teresa, and including Christy and Barbara Paer (1:09:04, pace 11:07, 9th AG place), won silver. The team is still second in the club standings.
- The 70+ Men Team, led by Brad, and including David and Stephen, won silver. The team is still third in the club standings, but is now only 6 points behind the second place.

The other age-division teams had an impressive day too: the 60+ Men Team, including Clément, Francesco and Clay, came in 4th, and is still first in the club standings (but would drop 4 points behind its main competitors, if the current lowest two scores for each club are dropped, as per the rules); the 50+ Women Team, including Lisa, Marcy and Florence, finished 6th and slid to 4th place in the club standings; the 40+ Women Team, including Kristel, Katie and Amanda, finished 13th and slid to 4th place in the club standings; the 50+ Men Team, including Clément, Francesco and Yacine, finished 16th and slid to 9th place in the club standings; the 40+ Men Team, including Jeff, Greg and Clément, finished 31st and is now tied for 13th place in the club standings.
