SUMMARY:June 2 | DEBS' Book Club w/ Author\, Kettia Ming
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to have our next in-person event with Kettia Ming\, a former New York Flyers\, and now author of "Run the Mile You're In: One Founder's Journey Through Success\, Loss & Reinvention." \n\n\n\nWhen entrepreneur and mother\, Kettia Ming is pulled into a high-stakes legal battle\, the fallout reaches far beyond her business. It threatens her family\, her sense of safety\, and the identity she worked to sustain. As the pressure escalates\, she is forced to reckon with the truth: the price was too high. \n\n\n\nRunning becomes her refuge. Offering her a place to breathe again and to reinvent her life with intention. \n\n\n\nTold with honesty and cinematic detail\, this book pulls back the curtain on what it means to pursue dreams within systems that were never designed to support you. Rooted in lived experience\, it offers hard-earned wisdom\, the missteps that cost more than money\, and the pivotal choices that redefine achievement. For anyone carrying more than they admit\, this story invites you to reclaim your power one mile at a time. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: Her book\, in hardcover\, paperback and Kindle\, will not be available for purchase until May 5th so reserve your copy now at: \n\n\n\nhttps://a.co/d/0eIFGOij \n\n\n\nOpen to Members and Non-Members. SUMMARY:February 27\, 2023 | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our first book for 2023 will be RUNNING WITH THE BUFFALOES by Chris Lear.  \nThe author\, Chris Lear\, follows the University of Colorado cross-country team through an unforgettable NCAA season.  Allowed unparalleled access to team practices\, private moments\, and the mind of Mark Wetmore--one of the country's most renowned and controversial coaches--Lear provides a riveting look inside the triumphs and heartaches of a perennial national contender and the men who will stop at nothing to achieve excellence. The Buffaloes' 1998 season held great promise\, with Olympic hopeful Adam Goucher poised for his first-ever NCAA cross-country title\, and the University of Colorado shooting for its first-ever national team title. But in the rigorous world of top-level collegiate sports\, blind misfortune can sabotage the dreams of individuals and teams alike. In a season plagued by injury and the tragic loss of a teammate\, the Buffaloes were tested as never before. What these men managed to achieve in the face of such adversity is the stuff of legend and glory. \n\nWith passion and suspense\, Lear captures the lives of these young men and offers a glimpse of what drives a gifted runner like Adam Goucher and a great coach like Mark Wetmore. Like Lance Armstrong's It's Not About the Bike\, RUNNING WITH THE BUFFALOES is at once a glowing celebration of a sport and an inspiration to anyone who has ever had the courage to beat the odds and follow a dream. \n\n\nListed as one of the top five Best Books About Running by Runner's World Magazine \n\nWhat: DEBS' Book Club \nWhen: 7:00 pm Monday\, February 27\, 2023 \nWhere: Telio Restaurant (Good Enough To Eat) at 520 Columbus Ave at 85th Street \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nFor Members and Non-Members \nYou can order the book (paperback\, new\, used\, audio version or on Kindle) HERE \nSample reading from the book HERE \nView Attendees HERE

DESCRIPTION:Please join us at our Book Club event where the author\, Nary Ly\, will attend and speak about her inspirational story\, "Survivor\, Scientist\, Olympian."  We will meet in person at the restaurant\, Good Enough to Eat (see details below). \nHow a Child of the Killing Fields Ran an Olympic Marathon and Inspired Her Broken Nation is a poignant and inspiring memoir of success against extreme odds. It traces the life of a young girl who endured the horrors of Cambodia's infamous Khmer Rouge regime\, then found haven in a new country\, France. Fostered by a family there\, she went on to become an infectious disease scientist\, and run an Olympic marathon. It explores how we acquire knowledge\, motivation\, and the ability to set a vision for life. It's a testament to one woman's dream to represent her struggling country and build the Olympic spirit of international unity. \nWhen: 6:30 pm Tuesday\, October 18th\, 2022 \nWhere: Good Enough To Eat Restaurant at: 520 Columbus Ave\, New York\, NY 10024 (at 85th St) \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nGroup Size: 22 \nThis book is available at various merchants but we suggest to buy it from HERE \nView Attendees HERE \n

SUMMARY:9/20/22 | DEBS' Book Club Event
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at our Book Club event where the author\, John Hanc\, will attend and speak about his book and adventure\, "The Coolest Race on Earth." We will meet in person at the restaurant\, Good Enough to Eat (see details below). \nWhat would induce hundreds of people from all over the world to spend thousands of dollars each and two weeks of their lives just to run a marathon in Antarctica? Especially one with a reputation as the toughest marathon on Earth?   John Hanc may have the answer. When he turned 50 he gave himself the birthday present to end all others--a trip to the end of the Earth to run his most unforgettable race. \nThe Coolest Race on Earth is both Hanc’s story and the story of the Antarctica Marathon\, first held in 1995 and now an annual event that sells out years in advance. It’s full of humor\, adventure\, and inspiring characters--including a wheelchair-bound competitor\, three record-breaking grandmothers\, and an ex-Marine who described the race as “the hardest thing I ever did in my life\, next to Vietnam.” \nMuddy\, cold\, hilly\, the race is by all accounts horrible--up and down a melting glacier twice\, past curious penguins and hostile skuas\, and finally to a bleak finish line. Even the best runners take longer to run the Antarctica Marathon than any other. \nYet the allure of marathon running combined with the fascinating reputation of the Last Continent has persuaded runners to brave a trip across the world’s most turbulent body of water\, the Drake Passage\, to a land of extinct volcanoes and craggy mountain peaks\, lost explorers and isolated scientists\, penguin rookeries and whale sightings\, all for a chance to run those crazy 26.2 miles. The Coolest Race on Earth brings the world’s most difficult marathon to life in a book that’s not only a ripping read\, but also a deeply funny meditation on what makes people run. \nWhen: 6:30 pm Tuesday\, September 20th\, 2022 \nWhere: Good Enough To Eat Restaurant at: 520 Columbus Ave\, New York\, NY 10024 (at 85th St) \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nGroup Size: 22 \nYou can order the book (new\, used and on Kindle) HERE \nView Attendees HERE

SUMMARY:July 12\, 2022 | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our next Book Club event will be held at the outdoor seating area at Good Enough To Eat Restaurant.  The book we will be discussing is\, "The Long Run" by Matthew Long - which is about a New York City firefighter's emotional and inspiring memoir of learning to run again after a debilitating accident\, based on the wildly popular March 2009 article in Runner's World. \nOn the morning of December 22\, 2005\, Matt Long was cycling to work in the early morning when he was struck by and sucked under a 20-ton bus making an illegal turn. The injuries he sustained pushed him within inches of his life. Miraculously\, more than 40 operations and months later\, Matt was able to start his recovery. In spite of the severity of his injuries\, Matt found the psychological consequences of the accident nearly as hard to process. He would no longer be able to compete at the highest level. In the 18 months before the accident\, he had competed in more than 20 events including several triathlons and marathons and had qualified for running's most prestigious race\, the Boston Marathon. After the accident\, his doctor told him he'd be lucky if he could even walk without a cane. \nThe Long Run is an emotional and incredibly honest story about Matt's determination to fight through fear\, despair\, loneliness\, and intense physical and psychological pain to regain the life he once had. The book chronicles Matt's road to recovery as he teaches himself to walk again and\, a mere three years later\, to run in the 2008 New York City Marathon—a gimpy seven-and-a-half hour journey through the five boroughs. "Running saved my life\," Matt says\, and his embrace of the running community and insistence on competing in the marathon has inspired many\, turning him into a symbol of hope and recovery for untold numbers of others. \nWhen: 6:30 pm Tuesday\, July 12th\, 2022 \nWhere: Good Enough To Eat Restaurant at: 520 Columbus Ave\, New York\, NY 10024 (at 85th St) \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nGroup Size: 20 \nYou can order the book  HERE \nView Attendees HERE

SUMMARY:May 23\, 2022 | DEBS' Book Club Zoom Event
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to have NY Flyers Members and Non Members join us for a ZOOM session with author\, ROBYN K. SCHNEIDER\, to discus her book\, "SILENT RUNNING: Our Family's Journey to the Finish Line with Autism." \n\n”The Schneider family represents the unrelenting determination of the human spirit that we find in long distance runners. We see time and again how those who discover the power of running are able to transform and improve their lives\, and this story is a profound representation of running's life-changing qualities. Silent Running celebrates Alex and Jamie's extraordinary and inspirational journey while encapsulating the everyday essence of a runner -- the triumphs\, struggles\, and joy that can emanate from putting one foot in front of another."  -- Mary Wittenberg\, Former President & CEO New York Road Runners\, Race Director NYC Marathon\nAt 21 months old\, identical twin brothers Alex and Jamie were diagnosed with autism. It was 1992\, a time when autism was far from a household word. Robyn and her husband Allan were heartsick\, but determined to find a cure for their sons\, and thus their journey into the world of autism began.  \n\nIn Silent Running\, Robyn Schneider takes readers on an intimate journey from a double diagnosis of autism\, through many years of heartache\, to a place of joy. Silent Running is a story of unrelenting love\, of parents who never stop chasing after the silver lining\, intent on finding happiness for their sons.\n \nAnd find happiness they do—in running. In Schneider’s moving memoir\, readers see Alex and Jamie transformed through running\, their lives enriched. And eventually they reach a place where running\, rather than autism\, defines them. Along the journey\, both Robyn and Allan face their own personal challenges. Allan begins running to help manage his symptoms of multiple sclerosis\, and Robyn\, while undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer\, laces up her own running shoes\, determined to run her way to recovery—for her family and for herself. And she hasn’t stopped.\n\n“Silent Running is an inspiration. Robyn Schneider is a warrior who has overcome one heartbreaking setback after another\, from her twin sons' diagnosis of   autism to her husband's MS to her own diagnosis with breast cancer. But through it all Robyn and her family never gave up on life\, instead finding joy and healing through running. You won't want to put this book down."  -- Geri Barish\,  Three-time breast cancer survivor & Founder 1 in 9\, The Long Island Breast Cancer Coalition \n\nWhat: DEBS' Book Club - Zoom Session with the AUTHOR! \nWhen: 7:00 pm Monday\, May 23\, 2022 \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nDuration: Approx. 60 minutes \nGroup Size: unlimited \nJOIN ZOOM MEETING at:  \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89142038435?pwd=dTZtNW5SVXVKQWUvQWNFZzlZc2xEZz09Meeting ID: 891 4203 8435Passcode: 077174One tap mobile+16465588656\,\,89142038435# US (New York)+13126266799\,\,89142038435# US (Chicago)Dial by your location        +1 646 558 8656 US (New York)        +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)        +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)        +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)        +1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)        +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) \nYou can order the book (new\, used or on Kindle)  HERE \nView Attendees HERE \n

SUMMARY:March 21\, 2022 | DEBS' Book Club Zoom Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a ZOOM session with author\, DANA AYERS\, to discus her book\, "Confessions of an Unlikely Runner: A Guide to Racing and Obstacle Courses for the Averagely Fit and Halfway Dedicated." \nThis event is open to NY Flyers Members and Non Members. \nWe are delighted to have author\, DANA AYERS\, join us to share all her experiences and behind the scenes in writing her book - which is described as witty\, observant\, and full of cringe-worthy confessions and heartwarming encouragement\, Confessions celebrates both running and life. \nPart Bridget Jones\, part Forrest Gump\, Dana Ayers chronicles her awkward mishaps and adventures in transitioning from childhood bookworm to accidental accomplished athlete. Over the last 10 years\, Ayers has completed a vast array of races and endurance challenges. She runs them all while admittedly not getting much faster\, much thinner\, or much more disciplined — though she has managed to be on national television\, split open her pants\, and get electrocuted. Ayers intersperses her hilarious yet relatable struggles with insights about how and why she keeps running. \nA self-proclaimed ambassador of slow runners\, Ayers has completed dozens of endurance challenges\, including Tough Mudder\, the Ragnar Relay\, Muddy Buddy\, Warrior Dash\, Run Amuck\, the Army Ten-Miler\, the Country Music Marathon\, and many more mud runs\, obstacles courses\, and races. Her race descriptions will entertain seasoned runners and non-runners alike. Woven into the chaos of her running adventures is compassionate reassurance for anyone who feels like they aren’t fast enough\, athletic enough\, or strong enough to finish a tough race. Though told with humor\, Confessions’ stories share an underlying theme of Ayers’ serious reverence for the sport of running and the running community. Ayers describes experiences such as participating in a 1\,000-mile relay for Boston Marathon bombing victims\, and being overcome by emotion while observing wounded veterans struggling to finish a race. Her stories prove how life-enriching it can be to physically fight for something and to cheer on others who are doing the same.  \nWhat: DEBS' Book Club - Zoom Session with the AUTHOR! \nWhen: 7:00 pm Monday\, March 21\, 2022 \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nDuration: Approx. 60 minutes \nGroup Size: unlimited \nYou can order the book HERE \nView Attendees HERE \nRSVP below.

SUMMARY:January 13\, 2022 | DEBS' Book Club Zoom Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a ZOOM session with author\, GEOFFREY SIMPSON\, to discus his book\, The Slummer. \nThis event is open to NY Flyers Members and Non Members. \nIt is a compelling\, futuristic novel that features a sport scarcely written about: running.  \nSet in the year 2083\, Benjamin Brandt is among the millions of “slummers” who are relegated to poverty and struggle on the outskirts of society. As a minority growing up in the gritty underbelly of Cleveland’s Industrial Valley\, Ben sees the way genetically designed “elites” live only from a distance: from the shadows of public spaces people like him are forbidden to use\, and on TV\, where he watches the enhanced athletes compete at an extraordinary level. For years\, a national track championship has inspired Ben to ferociously cultivate his own talent as a runner. \nAs Ben logs miles through the potholed\, darkened streets of his community\, an idea takes hold of him that could turn his highly stratified society upside down. He isn’t prepared to lead a revolution; however\, he is prepared to run like a slummer with nothing to lose. \n"This is the first running book I've read that I think\, wow this is like peeking into my brain and my way of thinking. I will be reading it again and again." CHRIS SOLINSKY\, Former American Record Holder - 10\,000 m (26:59.60) \n"The Slummer's inspiring story pits the indomitable spirit of a runner against economic disparity and genetic engineering in a believable\, dystopian tomorrow." JONATHAN BEVERLY\, Editor in Chief - PodiumRunner \nWhat: DEBS' Book Club - Zoom Session with the AUTHOR! \nWhen: 7:00 pm Thursday\, January 13\, 2022 \nHosts: Deb Saat & Debi Unger \nDuration: Approx. 60 minutes \nGroup Size: unlimited \nYou can order the book HERE \nView Attendees HERE \nRSVP below.
