SUMMARY:10/18/22 | DEBS' Book Club Event
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at our Book Club event where the author\, Nary Ly\, will attend and speak about her inspirational story\, "Survivor\, Scientist\, Olympian."  We will meet in person at the restaurant\, Good Enough to Eat (see details below). \nHow a Child of the Killing Fields Ran an Olympic Marathon and Inspired Her Broken Nation is a poignant and inspiring memoir of success against extreme odds. It traces the life of a young girl who endured the horrors of Cambodia's infamous Khmer Rouge regime\, then found haven in a new country\, France. Fostered by a family there\, she went on to become an infectious disease scientist\, and run an Olympic marathon. At the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro\, Nary was a proud impromptu flagbearer for Cambodia crossing the finish line. \nRich in anecdotes and characters\, The Nary Ly Story is moving and emotional\, mixing tears and laughter. It explores how we acquire knowledge\, motivation\, and the ability to set a vision for life. It's a testament to one woman's dream to represent her struggling country and build the Olympic spirit of international unity. \nWhen: 6:30 pm Tuesday\, October 18th\, 2022 \nWhere: Good Enough To Eat Restaurant at: 520 Columbus Ave\, New York\, NY 10024 (at 85th St) \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nGroup Size: 22 \nThis book is available at various merchants but we suggest to buy it from HERE \nView Attendees HERE \n

SUMMARY:Volunteer Pacer | Last 10 Miles Run
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT SEE EITHER THE "RSVP" OR "TICKETS" OPTION BELOW\, WE ARE WORKING ON RESOLVING THESE ISSUES. PLEASE CHECK BACK LATER TO REGISTER. THERE ARE PLENTY OF REMAINING OPENINGS. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE. \n\n\n\nNY Flyers Last 10 Miles Supported Long Run \n\n\n\nWhen: Sunday\, October 23rd\, 2022 \n\n\n\nWho: Members and Non-members: Non-members who Volunteer to Pace\, run for FREE. \n\n\n\nFlyer Members who volunteer will receive a gift card to Fleet Feet as a thank you for their service. \n\n\n\nOrganizer: NY Flyers \n\n\n\nQuestions: contact deb.nyflyers@gmail.com \n\n\n\nDetails: Come out and support our team by volunteering to be a pacer at our Last 10 Miles of the NYC Marathon Training Run. Please note: we would like our pacers to do the full 10 miles. PACE GROUPS: We need at least one pacer for each group starting at 8:00 minutes/mile through 12:30 minutes/mile at 30 second intervals. If you would like to be a Pacer for a slower Pace (or a faster one)\, for a Walking Pace or a Run/Walk Pace\, please contact us. \n\n\n\nIf you have never paced\, you will be paired with an experienced partner. This is a great opportunity to lead a group of runners and enjoy the camaraderie of group and the gratitude of other runners. Remember that when you pace\, you should choose a pace at least 30 seconds slower than your own training pace to ensure that you can keep the pace for the length of the run. \n\n\n\nAs a pacer\, you have group members relying on you to keep to the designated pace\, so wanting to go faster because everything feels good during the run is a feeling you will need to ignore - you need to keep the pace at all times (unless hurt or exhausted\, of course). Pacing is a wonderful experience - if you've never done it before\, you will be hooked\, just like many of our longstanding pacers are.    \n\n\n\nFor details about the run\, please see the EVENT PAGE \n\n\n\nSign up below and list your preferred TRAINING RUN pace. The PACING coordinator will get back to you to finalize. \n\n\n\nA view-only list of Pacers is: HERE

SUMMARY:NY Flyers Food Drive Fundraiser 2022
DESCRIPTION:2022 NY Flyer Food Drive Fundraiser\, benefiting City Harvest \n\n\n\nFifteen years of Sparkle and Shine. \n\n\n\nIn addition to being the largest running club in New York City\, the New York Flyers support a variety of community-based and charitable causes throughout the year. Since 2008\, the Flyers have partnered with local food banks to help alleviate hunger in our own community.  \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 brought with it illness\, stress\, uncertainty\, family struggles\, job losses\, the passing of loved ones\, and a staggering death toll worldwide.  While New York is well on the road to economic recovery\, food insecurity for people who were living near or under the poverty margin before the pandemic continues.  Today\, more than 1.5 million people in New York City\, including one in three children\, do not have enough to eat.  \n\n\n\nDuring 2020\, City Harvest expanded its existing food rescue and delivery\, nutrition education\, and healthy retail programs by repackaging and distributing 191 million pounds of food (twice its capacity for the same period a year before the pandemic)\, and supporting 32 new emergency food distribution sites in high-need neighborhoods\, including feeding frontline medical workers at sites close to hospitals. \n\n\n\nIf you can\, please help City Harvest continue its mission of providing access to healthy\, nutritious food by participating in the 2022 Flyer Food Drive Fundraiser.  Click the DONATE NOW button to be directed to the donation site. \n\n\n\n\nDONATE NOW\n\n\n\n\nThis year’s fundraising drive starts on Sunday\, November 13 and closes at 9:00 PM on Friday\, December 18. \n\n\n\nFrequently Asked Questions \n\n\n\nWhy City Harvest?City Harvest was started in 1982 by a group of ordinary New Yorkers who were troubled how much fresh\, usable food was thrown out on a daily basis by restaurants. This group of volunteers rounded up friends and cars to pick up the discarded food in order to transport it to where it was needed the most. City Harvest currently supports fresh food distribution to a network of more than 500 food pantries\, soup kitchens\, and other community partners. City Harvest also sponsors programs to increase both nutritional knowledge and the availability of affordable\, nutritious food in low-income communities. Best of all\, 93 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to helping people in need. \n\n\n\nIs there a minimum donation? No. Every dollar given is greatly appreciated and goes towards stemming the tide of hunger in New York City. \n\n\n\nHow much are we trying to raise? We set our goal for 2022 at $3500. In the twelve years the fundraiser has operated\, we have often raised significantly more. \n\n\n\nIs my donation tax deductible?Yes\, if you itemize your deductions. \n\n\n\nCan I apply for employer matching?Yes\, if your employer supports this. Please follow this link for details. If you send in a matching gifts form from your employer\, please note that the donation is in support of the 2021 New York Flyers Holiday Food Drive Fundraiser \n\n\n\nTogether\, we can help support our neighbors and fight the war on hunger this holiday season. We hope you join the battle.

The program is limited to 80 runners and typically sells out quickly. \nWhat: NY Flyers' Winter Training Program (WTP) led by Head Coach Brian Rosetti of V.O2 and is designed to help members prepare for their spring goal races. \n\n16 coached practices.\n16-week training plan based on your training history and goals.\nAssigned group coach to guide/support you throughout the season.\nCoaching support via email and on V.O2.\n\nThe NY Flyers’ Winter/Spring Training Program is accessible to runners of all levels. Our coaching program prides itself on proper training methodology\, great customer service and making practices fun and challenging at the same time!  \nTraining Plan: All participants will receive a personalized training plan geared towards their season goal(s). The 16-week training plan will start January 1st and end April 23rd. Participants fill out an athlete survey so an MTP coach can review their recent training/racing history\, goals\, etc. before personalizing their plan. Training plans are published to each participant’s V.O2 calendar\, which includes the ability to manage your training on the mobile app\, website and/or a PDF copy. V.O2 also syncs with GPS so you can easily manage your prescribed workouts and actual splits. Your MTP coach will help manage your training calendar\, which will also include recommendations on cross training\, strength\, mobility exercises and nutrition\, etc.  \nCoaching Support: Each participant is assigned a “group coach” to guide them through the training program. Participants receive a coaching invite so their assigned coach can manage their training calendar. Coaches leave comments\, feedback and are available by email to help motivate and make adjustments to participants’ training along the way. \nPractices: Members gather between 6:30-6:45 pm in the lobby on the main level of Time Warner Center. Runners will depart from there to the park promptly at 6:45 pm. Bag check is available on the second floor of the Time Warner Center at the Fleet Feet store. \nAll athletes train with their assigned coach and group (broken down by experience and fitness level) but at individualized paces prescribed in their training plan. Practices typically finish (around 8:00pm) with some mobility exercises (weather permitting). \nSocials: TBD. Typically\, we meet at least once per month for a post-practice organized social gathering at a nearby bar/restaurant. \nWhen: First Practice is Wednesday\, January 4th\, 2023 \nWhere: Central Park (Columbus Circle) every Wednesday evening \nOrganizer: New York Flyers \nCost: $270.00 prorated rate (no refunds) \nFor more detailed information\, see our Training Page. \nQuestions: brian@runsmartproject.com \nBy purchasing your ticket to WTP\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to the attached Liability Waiver and our Code of Conduct \nPlease Note: We will continue to abide by state and city Covid-19 guidelines. The safety of our runners and coaches is of utmost importance. \nIf you're not quite sure if MTP is right for you\, please consider signing up for our Winter/Spring SpeedPass program. \nClick HERE to see who's going (this list is updated manually daily) \nNOTE: YOU MUST BE LOGGED IN ON THE FLYERS WEBSITE IN ORDER TO SIGN UP. \n

SUMMARY:February 27\, 2023 | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our first book for 2023 will be RUNNING WITH THE BUFFALOES by Chris Lear.  \nThe author\, Chris Lear\, follows the University of Colorado cross-country team through an unforgettable NCAA season.  Allowed unparalleled access to team practices\, private moments\, and the mind of Mark Wetmore--one of the country's most renowned and controversial coaches--Lear provides a riveting look inside the triumphs and heartaches of a perennial national contender and the men who will stop at nothing to achieve excellence. The Buffaloes' 1998 season held great promise\, with Olympic hopeful Adam Goucher poised for his first-ever NCAA cross-country title\, and the University of Colorado shooting for its first-ever national team title. But in the rigorous world of top-level collegiate sports\, blind misfortune can sabotage the dreams of individuals and teams alike. In a season plagued by injury and the tragic loss of a teammate\, the Buffaloes were tested as never before. What these men managed to achieve in the face of such adversity is the stuff of legend and glory. \n\nWith passion and suspense\, Lear captures the lives of these young men and offers a glimpse of what drives a gifted runner like Adam Goucher and a great coach like Mark Wetmore. Like Lance Armstrong's It's Not About the Bike\, RUNNING WITH THE BUFFALOES is at once a glowing celebration of a sport and an inspiration to anyone who has ever had the courage to beat the odds and follow a dream. \n\n\nListed as one of the top five Best Books About Running by Runner's World Magazine \n\nWhat: DEBS' Book Club \nWhen: 7:00 pm Monday\, February 27\, 2023 \nWhere: Telio Restaurant (Good Enough To Eat) at 520 Columbus Ave at 85th Street \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nFor Members and Non-Members \nYou can order the book (paperback\, new\, used\, audio version or on Kindle) HERE \nSample reading from the book HERE \nView Attendees HERE

SUMMARY:Presidents & Patriots Run POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:The Presidents and Patriots Run is strictly non-partisan. The ten-mile route celebrates and knocks Presidential figures of both parties pretty much equally. The start at Columbus Circle and finish near the Battery are close to most subway lines\, as is an easy cutoff at halfway in Washington Square Park. Although the run ends near the Battery\, it’s an easy seven mile run back along the Hudson River for those who want a long run.  \n\n\n\nThe run includes Presidents\, Would-be Presidents\, International leaders and other great notables that tell the story of everything Presidential in New York! \n\n\n\nDate: Postponed- We will post rescheduled at later date \n\n\n\nTime: 8 AM \n\n\n\nStart: Columbus Circle\, Maine Monument \n\n\n\nPaces: 9:00 & 11:00 \n\n\n\nDistance: 10 Miles @ 9M/M (With options for 5 Miles and 17 Miles) \n\n\n\nDistance:  8 Miles @ 11M/M (With options for 4.25 & 15 Miles) \n\n\n\nWhat to Wear & Bring: This is an unsupported run so you may want to bring your own fluids and fuel. \n\n\n\nQuestions: Contact Brad Goz

SUMMARY:May 3rd | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:"Good for a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man's World" \nA NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER \nFueled by her years as an elite runner and advocate for women in sports\, Lauren Fleshman offers her inspiring personal story and a rallying cry for reform of a sports landscape that is failing young female athletes. Written with heart and verve\, Good for a Girl is a joyful love letter to the running life\, a raw personal narrative of growth and change\, and a vital call to reimagine sports for young women. \n“Women’s sports have needed a manifesto for a very long time\, and with Lauren Fleshman’s Good for a Girl we finally have one.”—Malcolm Gladwell\, author of Outliers and David and Goliath \n“Good for a Girl is simultaneously a moving memoir and a call to action in how we think about—and train—girls and women in elite sports. It’s a must-read—for anyone who loves running\, for anyone who has a daughter\, and for anyone who cares about creating a better future for young women.”—Emily Oster\, author of Expecting Better\, Cribsheet\, and The Family Firm \nPart memoir\, part manifesto\, Good for a Girl is Fleshman’s story of falling in love with running as a girl\, being pushed to her limits and succumbing to devastating injuries\, and daring to fight for a better way for female athletes. Long gone are the days when women and girls felt lucky just to participate; Fleshman and women everywhere are waking up to the reality that they’re running\, playing\, and competing in a world that wasn’t made for them. Drawing on not only her own story but also emerging research on the physiology and psychology of young athletes\, of any gender\, Fleshman gives voice to the often-silent experience of the female athlete and argues that the time has come to rebuild our systems of competitive sport with women at their center. \nWhat: DEBS' Book Club \nWhen: 6:30 pm Wednesday\, May 3rd \nWhere: Fred's \n476 Amsterdam Ave (83rd St)\, New York\, NY 10024 \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nOpen to Members and Non-Members \nYou can order the book (Hardcover\, Kindle or Audiobook) and listen to an audio sample HERE. \nView Attendees HERE \n

SUMMARY:Central Park Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:DATE/TIME: SATURDAY\, MAY 6th\, 10AM - NOON \n\n\n\nWHAT: Past events have included raking\, planting\, pruning\, painting\, weeding\, and more. \n\n\n\nWHERE: TBD at a location in Central Park \n\n\n\nWHY: Heather Marcellis launched these events for the Flyers with Central Park Conservancy (CPC) in 2004\, and she and Dave Kleckner have co-led together since 2010. The intent remains to give back and help maintain the beauty that is Central Park\, where so many of us do so much of our running. We've held these events as often as 2-3 times per year\, and not since the pandemic\, but just got the go-ahead from CPC to resume. \n\n\n\nWHY ELSE: Camaraderie and Cookies (Heather will be baking and bringing her extraordinary cookies once again)  \n\n\n\nRegistration: Procedures have changed. CPC no longer is limiting this to NY Flyers participants. Rather it is first come first serve via the CPC website. So please only register if you know you can make it\, but please don't delay since the event is open to the public and will sell out -- so if you don't act quickly you may get closed out. \n\n\n\nYou can register HERE (Unfortunately\, this event quickly filled up and is currently unavailable.) \n\n\n\nNOTE: Once you register\, PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO DAVE KLECKNER at: blogmaster@nyflyers.org so we can compile a list of everyone attending this event. \n\n\n\nWe hope to see you there! \n\n\n\n***UPDATE (APRIL 12\, 2023): The event already is sold out\, however\, Central Park Conservancy said they'll accommodate 4 more Flyers beyond those who already registered by April 11th. \n\n\n\nSo please email me at blogmaster@nyflyers.org if you'd like to be one of the Lucky 4 to be added to the list of registrants -- FIRST COME FIRST SERVE   -- DAVE KLECKNER
