SUMMARY:October 8th | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Zoom Session begins at 7:00 PM \n\n\nHOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? Mastering the Psychology of Mind over Muscle by Matt Fitzgerald \n10/8/24 (6:30 pm at Fred's) & 7:00pm - 8:00pm ZOOM session (Zoom Link TBD) \nThe Debs are thrilled to host the next book club with author\, Matt Fitzgerald\, of the book\, "HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT?" via ZOOM - with the option of members meeting as a group at Fred's Restaurant (see below). \nFitzgerald puts you into the pulse-pounding action of more than a dozen epic races from running\, cycling\, triathlon\, XTERRA\, and rowing with thrilling race reports and revealing post-race interviews with the elites. Their own words reinforce what the research has found: strong mental fitness lets us approach our true physical limits\, giving us an edge over physically stronger competitors. Each chapter explores the how and why of an elite athlete’s transformative moment\, revealing powerful new psychobiological principles you can practice to flex your own mental fitness. \nThe new psychobiological model of endurance performance shows that the most important question in endurance sports is: how bad do you want it? and reveals new psychobiological findings including: \n\nMental toughness determines how close you can get to your physical limit.\nBracing yourself for a tough race or workout can boost performance by 15% or more.\nChampions have learned how to give more of what they have.\nThe only way to improve performance is by altering how you perceive effort.\nChoking under pressure is a form of self-consciousness.\nYour attitude in daily life is the same one you bring to sports.\nThere’s no such thing as going as fast as you can—only going faster than before.\nThe fastest racecourse is the one with the loudest spectators.\nFaith in your training is as important as the training itself.\n\nAthletes feature: Sammy Wanjiru\, Jenny Simpson\, Greg LeMond\, Siri Lindley\, Willie Stewart\, Cadel Evans\, Nathan Cohen and Joe Sullivan\, Paula Newby-Fraser\, Ryan Vail\, Thomas Voeckler\, Ned Overend\, Steve Prefontaine\, and last of all John “The Penguin” Bingham \nWhen: Tuesday\, October 8th\, 2024: 6:30pm for those meeting at Fred's / 7:00pm - Zoom event begins \nWhere: Group Zoom will be held in the back room at: Fred's Restaurant 476 Amsterdam Ave (83rd St) \nOr join via ZOOM at 7:00 PM on your own \nZOOM LINK (TBD) \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nOpen to Members and Non-Members \nHOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? is available in Paperback (New or Used)\, Audio Book and Kindle

SUMMARY:January 7th | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Zoom Session begins at 7:00 PM \n\n\n1/7/2025 (6:30 pm at Fred's)  \nTHE ZOOM SESSION IS CANCELLED.  \nUnfortunately\, the author is unable to attend our event due to bad weather affecting her travel itinerary. Please plan on attending Fred’s for a social get-together if you can. See details below. \nA later date will be scheduled for a zoom session with the author\, Sabrina Little. TBD \nThe DEBs are excited to host the next Book Club event with author\, Sabrina Little\, of the book\, "The Examined Run: Why Good People Make Better Runners." Sabrina will be joining us via Zoom. \nCan running make me a more moral person? Can striving to be a better person make me a better runner? \nIn The Examined Run\, philosopher and ultramarathon runner Sabrina B. Little asks whether running can be a laboratory for developing our character. She looks at the key ideas in virtue ethics-virtue\, vice\, exemplarism\, moral emotions\, and competition-and brings them into conversation with her experience in training and racing. Little pushes against the frequent conversations about ethics and sport that focus on the negative-doping and other forms of cheating or on simplistic expressions like "no pain\, no gain." She argues that these ideas don't address the rich picture of how athletics inform a good life\, and sport's relationship to acts of justice or courage. A good athlete is not just one who avoids cheating-rather\, they perform feats of perseverance and courage\, and succeed by working to develop their natural capacities. Little employs her own experiences in training\, coaching\, and racing in world class ultramarathons to reveal how athletics and virtue are deeply interconnected. \nWhen: Tuesday\, January 7\, 2025 at 6:30pm for those meeting at Fred's. \nWhere: in the back room at: Fred's Restaurant 476 Amsterdam Ave (83rd St) \nNOTE: The author had to cancel and is unable to attend so the zoom portion of this event has been cancelled. We will reschedule a zoom session with the author\, Sabrina Little. TBD \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nOpen to Members and Non-Members. \nSign-up will be on the Heylo app soon. \nTHE EXAMINED RUN is available in Paperback (New or Used)\, Audio Book and Kindle

SUMMARY:March 11th| DEBS' Film Club
DESCRIPTION:Access the film HERE \nNOTE: There are 5 separate video clips\,VTS_01_1.VOB - VTS_01_5.VOB  \nDebi & Deb are over-the-moon excited about their next event! Filmmakers and featured runners in the documentary\, "26.2 to Life" will join us via Zoom to discuss this highly inspirational film. That's right\, no book this month. Your assignment is to view a film!! \n"26.2 to Life" ...Behind the walls of San Quentin State Prison\, the film follows three men sentenced to life in prison for murder who undertake running a marathon on a quest for redemption and freedom — or something like it.\nThe San Quentin Prison Marathon has an unconventional route: 105 dizzying laps around a crowded prison yard. For the men who take their places at the starting line on a cool\, sunny November morning\, completing the marathon means more than entrée into an elite group of athletes. It’s a chance to be defined by more than their crimes. Cheering them on are a small staff of volunteer coaches\, veteran marathoners who train with the runners throughout the year. The bonds they forge on the track create a community that transcends prison politics and extends beyond the prison walls as members are released. “26.2 to Life” is a story of transformation and second chances. The film offers a rare glimpse into a world out of bounds\, as the men navigating life sentences seek redemption and freedom. \nThe film is about the true story of San Quentin's 1000 Mile Club training and competing in a 26.2 mile marathon inside the prison yard. One inmate earned an early parole from his life sentence to compete in the Boston and NYC marathons. First time film director Christine Yoo and her inspiring cast of inmates participate in an innovative rehabilitation program that other prisons are now adopting.  \n"26.2 for Life" Zoom Event Participants: \nDiana & Tim Fitzpatrick - San Quentin Running Club Coaches \nOne or Two Inmates/Alumni of the San Quentin Running Club \nInformation on how to access and view the film for free: See event in Heylo for instructions  \nAccess the film HERE \nNOTE: There are 5 separate video clips\,VTS_01_1.VOB - VTS_01_5.VOB  \nWhen: Tuesday\, March 11th\, 2025 at 6:30pm for those meeting at Fred's. \nZOOM event begins at 7:00 pm: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86033594452Meeting ID: 860 3359 4452+16465588656\,\,86033594452# US (New York); +16469313860\,\,86033594452# US \nWhere in person: Group will meet in the back room at: Fred's Restaurant 476 Amsterdam Ave (83rd St) \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nSign up on Heylo.
