SUMMARY:JULY 22nd | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The DEBS chose this book to start off your summer with a fast\, fun\, inspirational\, humorous\, light read AND this book is NOT just for girls. \nPlease join us for an in-person session to discuss\, "Running Like a Girl. Notes on Learning to Run" by Alexandra Heminsley \nIn "Running Like a Girl\," Alexandra Heminsley embarks on a courageous and life-altering journey that challenges not only her physical endurance but also her mental strength. With honesty and humor\, she explores the transformative power of running\, revealing how it can empower both women and men to overcome the limitations they have placed upon themselves. From her humble beginnings as a novice runner\, Heminsley delves into the countless obstacles she faces along the way\, dispelling the notion that athleticism is an inherent trait. Whether you are a seasoned runner or someone seeking inspiration to begin their own fitness journey\, this captivating memoir will empower you to push beyond your perceived limitations\, encouraging you to embrace the joy and liberation that comes from running.\n \n\n\n\n"Alexandra Heminsley has the courage to abandon her comfort zone and try something truly daunting and intimidating\, running a marathon. In doing so she proves to herself that she is better than she thought she was and is capable of going further than she ever thought she ever could. These are invaluable life lessons that transcend running itself. You will enjoy this book—and learn and laugh in the processes—whether you run great distances\, modest distances\, or not at all.” — Dean Karnazes\, Ultramarathon Man and New York Times bestselling author \n"The author is so insightful about how difficult it is to commit to a regular running routine--especially if you don't consider yourself a natural athlete. But Heminsley is also very honest about the emotional rewards of running: how much more confident and happy she feels because she does it regularly. Pick up Running Like a Girl: Notes on Learning to Run for a great read and plenty of practical tips." — Health Magazine \n"[Heminsley's] honesty is winning: her first run is a disaster. . . . Her sketches of her family members are witty. What's truly excellent about this book\, though\, is its generosity." — London Observer \n"If the word marathon brings you out in a cold sweat\, then this brilliantly titled book is the perfect antidote to running reluctance… It’s an honest and uplifting account\, pitching practical know-how... with insights into the personal doubts and daunts of [Heminsley's] own life. There’s nothing preachy or smug about her stance. Instead\, it’s an inspiring reminder of what we’re all capable of if we put our minds to it." — Marie Claire UK \n‘This is not simply a book about running – it’s about discipline\, self-knowledge and relationships\, and should inspire even the most committed couch potato to strap on their trainers and run.’ — London Daily Mail"If you've ever cried out\, WHY WOULD I WANT TO RUN?\, your answer is here." — Caitlin Moran\, author of How to Be a Woman"The morning after I finished this book\, I got my running shoes on. Funny\, wise\, and inspirational\, Alexandra Heminsley manages to make running seem not just possible\, but life-affirming\, liberating\, and fun." — Jojo Moyes\, author of Me Before YouYou can order the book in various formats: hardcover\, paperback\, Kindle or Audiobook HERE. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat: DEBS' Book Club\n \nWhen: 6:30 pm - 8:00pm\, Monday\, July 22nd\, 2024\n \nWhere: at Telio Taverna (Good Enough to Eat) at 520 Columbus Avenue at 85th St\, New York\, NY 10024\n\n\n\n***PLEASE BRING CASH in various denominations to pay for your meal & drinks. Full details on Heylo! \n\n\n\nThe full distance of this run is 20 miles\, but it is easy to shorten it by finishing at the Manhattan end of the Queensboro Bridge (16 miles)\, the Queens end of the Queensboro Bridge (15 miles) or at any of the many nearby subway stops along the way.   \n\n\n\nMeet at the Fleet Feet Store at Columbus Circle. We will start running at the Maine Monument in Central Park\, then west on 72nd Street to the Hudson River Greenway. Take the Greenway south and then cross east on Warren Street through City Hall Park across the Brooklyn Bridge to the steps to exit the bridge. Run around the perimeter of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Steiner Studios heading north along the Brooklyn waterfront until reaching the Pulaski Bridge to cross in to Queens. Continue heading north to the Queensboro Bridge. After crossing the Queensboro Bridge continue directly to the Fleet Feet store at Columbus Circle for a shorter run\, or back into Central Park to complete the full 20 miles ending at Fleet Feet in the Deutsche Bank Center (formerly Time Warner Center.) \n\n\n\nThere are three fluid stations along the route. The first fluid station will be at Hudson River Greenway and Chambers St\, around mile 7.1 The second fluid station will be around mile 11.1 at Kent Av and Clymer St. in Brooklyn. The third fluid station is around mile 15 in Queens just before the Queensboro Bridge at the intersection of 11th street and Queens Plaza South. Each fluid station will have water\, Gatorade\, and Power Gels.  There are some public water fountains and bathrooms along part of the route. \n\n\n\nPace groups: There will be at least one pacer for each group starting at 8:00 minutes/mile through 12:00 minutes/mile at 30 second intervals. We will help group runners who may want to run sub 8:00 minutes/mile\, if there is interest. \n\n\n\nMore Details on Heylo! This run will take us through three boroughs and over three bridges (the Brooklyn Bridge\, Pulaski Bridge\, and 59th Street Bridge). We will cross the 59th Street Bridge at about mile 16\, almost the same as in the TCS NYC Marathon. This fantastic run will prepare you\, both physically and mentally\, for the challenges that await you on November 3\, 2024.

SUMMARY:October 8th | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Zoom Session begins at 7:00 PM \n\n\nHOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? Mastering the Psychology of Mind over Muscle by Matt Fitzgerald \n10/8/24 (6:30 pm at Fred's) & 7:00pm - 8:00pm ZOOM session (Zoom Link TBD) \nThe Debs are thrilled to host the next book club with author\, Matt Fitzgerald\, of the book\, "HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT?" via ZOOM - with the option of members meeting as a group at Fred's Restaurant (see below). \nFitzgerald puts you into the pulse-pounding action of more than a dozen epic races from running\, cycling\, triathlon\, XTERRA\, and rowing with thrilling race reports and revealing post-race interviews with the elites. Their own words reinforce what the research has found: strong mental fitness lets us approach our true physical limits\, giving us an edge over physically stronger competitors. Each chapter explores the how and why of an elite athlete’s transformative moment\, revealing powerful new psychobiological principles you can practice to flex your own mental fitness. \nThe new psychobiological model of endurance performance shows that the most important question in endurance sports is: how bad do you want it? and reveals new psychobiological findings including: \n\nMental toughness determines how close you can get to your physical limit.\nBracing yourself for a tough race or workout can boost performance by 15% or more.\nChampions have learned how to give more of what they have.\nThe only way to improve performance is by altering how you perceive effort.\nChoking under pressure is a form of self-consciousness.\nYour attitude in daily life is the same one you bring to sports.\nThere’s no such thing as going as fast as you can—only going faster than before.\nThe fastest racecourse is the one with the loudest spectators.\nFaith in your training is as important as the training itself.\n\nAthletes feature: Sammy Wanjiru\, Jenny Simpson\, Greg LeMond\, Siri Lindley\, Willie Stewart\, Cadel Evans\, Nathan Cohen and Joe Sullivan\, Paula Newby-Fraser\, Ryan Vail\, Thomas Voeckler\, Ned Overend\, Steve Prefontaine\, and last of all John “The Penguin” Bingham \nWhen: Tuesday\, October 8th\, 2024: 6:30pm for those meeting at Fred's / 7:00pm - Zoom event begins \nWhere: Group Zoom will be held in the back room at: Fred's Restaurant 476 Amsterdam Ave (83rd St) \nOr join via ZOOM at 7:00 PM on your own \nZOOM LINK (TBD) \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nOpen to Members and Non-Members \nHOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? is available in Paperback (New or Used)\, Audio Book and Kindle
