SUMMARY:NY Flyers Food Drive Fundraiser 2023
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Food Drive: 2023 New York Flyers Holiday Food Drive Fundraiser - City Harvest \n\n\n\nSweet Sixteen! \n\n\n\nTurning sixteen is a rite of passage for many\, and this year the Flyer Holiday Food Drive Fundraiser reaches this milestone anniversary.  Since 2008\, the Flyers have raised over $50\,000 in total to support local food banks in alleviating hunger in our own community. \n\n\n\nInflation persists throughout the US\, and as we approach the end of the year\, higher prices for just about everything continue to take a hefty bite out of all of our wallets.  According to April's True Cost of Living Report (copy and paste https://unitedwaynyc.org/true-cost-of-living/ into your browser for access)\, 50% of working-age households in New York City have difficulty affording the most basic living expenses of rent\, utilities\, and food.  Visits to New York City food pantries and soup kitchens\, which surged during the pandemic\, remain 60% higher than pre-pandemic levels.  Today\, more than 1.2 million people in New York City\, including one in five children\, do not have enough to eat. \n\n\n\nSince its inception over forty years ago\, City Harvest has distributed over a billion pounds of food to needy New Yorkers. Today\, City Harvest food trucks roll through the streets seven days a week to provide access to healthy\, nutritious food to the people who need it most. Please help support the mission by participating in the 2023 Flyers Holiday Food Drive Fundraiser. This year’s fundraising drive starts on Sunday\, November 12 and closes at 9:00 PM on Sunday\, December 17. \n\n\n\nAbout City Harvest \n\n\n\nCity Harvest is New York’s first and largest food rescue organization\, helping to feed millions of New Yorkers who struggle to put meals on their tables. This year\, City Harvest will rescue 75 million pounds of fresh\, nutritious food and deliver it—free of charge—to hundreds of food pantries\, soup kitchens\, community partners and Mobile Markets across the five boroughs. City Harvest also works alongside community partners to boost community capacity\, expand nutrition education\, and strengthen local food systems. For over forty years\, City Harvest has been there to feed our city—one day\, one meal\, one New Yorker at a time. \n\n\n\nEvery $1 donated helps City Harvest feed two New Yorkers for a day. By donating\, you’ll help keep City Harvest’s trucks on the road and filled with nutritious food for our neighbors in need. \n\n\n\nClick “Donate Now” to make a tax-deductible contribution. Thank you for your compassion\, generosity\, and support! \n\n\n\nThis year’s fundraising drive starts on Sunday\, November 12 and closes at 9:00 PM on Friday\, December 17 \n\n\n\nVirtual Food Drive: 2023 New York Flyers Holiday Food Drive Fundraiser - City Harvest \n\n\n\nTogether\, we can help support our neighbors and fight the war on hunger this holiday season. We hope you join the battle.

SUMMARY:November 5 | Project Finish
DESCRIPTION:PROJECT FINISH 2023 \n\nEvery year\, NYRR invites everyone to come to the finish line hours after most of the runners have crossed and are home or back at their hotels showered and well-fed to help cheer in the very last runners on the course. If you'd like to be inspired by the perseverance of these most tenacious of runners\, come join us!\n\n\nWe usually get access to the finish line starting around 7:30pm (it varies every year) - if you still can't enter the park at the Tavern entrance on 67th St\, just walk down a couple of blocks to 63rd St and that one should be accessible. We'll be gathering at the bleachers leading up to the finish on the west side of the course.\nhttps://www.villagevoice.com/project-finish-cheered-the.../\nhttps://www.instagram.com/projectfinishnyc/\n\nHosts: Hiromi Nobata \n  \n

SUMMARY:Central Park Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:DATE/TIME: SATURDAY\, NOVEMBER 4th\, 10AM - NOON \n\n\n\nWHAT: Past events have included raking\, planting\, pruning\, painting\, weeding\, and more. \n\n\n\nWHERE: TBD at a location in Central Park \n\n\n\nWHY: Heather Marcellis launched these events for the Flyers with Central Park Conservancy (CPC) in 2004\, and she and Dave Kleckner have co-led together since 2010. The intent remains to give back and help maintain the beauty that is Central Park\, where so many of us do so much of our running. We've held these events as often as 2-3 times per year\, and not since the pandemic\, but just got the go-ahead from CPC to resume. \n\n\n\nWHY ELSE: Camaraderie and Cookies (Heather will be baking and bringing her extraordinary cookies once again)  \n\n\n\nRegistration: Procedures have changed. CPC no longer is limiting this to NY Flyers participants. Rather it is FIRST COME FIRST SERVE via the CPC website. So please only register if you know you can make it\, but please don't delay since the event is open to the public and will sell out -- so if you don't act quickly you may get closed out. \n\n\n\nYou can register HERE \n\n\n\nNOTE: Once you register\, PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO DAVE KLECKNER at: blogmaster@nyflyers.org so we can compile a list of everyone attending this event. \n\n\n\nWe hope to see you there!-- DAVE KLECKNER

SUMMARY:October 23rd | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in-person session with NYRR Coach & Author\, GORDON BAKOULIS\, to discuss one of her books: "How to Train for and Run Your Best Marathon" AND to receive some last minute guidance for the upcoming NYC Marathon!  \n\n\n\nGORDON BAKOULIS is an RRCA-certified running coach and has coached runners at all levels since 1985\, working with NYRR\, Athena New York\, Craftsbury Running Camp\, Maine Running Camp\, and others. Gordon qualified for the U.S. Olympic marathon trials in 1988\, 1992\, 1996\, 2000\, and 2004 and was a finalist in the 1992 U.S. Olympic 10\,000m trials. She has represented the U.S. internationally at the 10K\, half-marathon\, and marathon distances\, and has run a 1:11 half-marathon and a 2:33 marathon. Gordon has run more than 35 marathons (including eight New York City Marathons) and countless races at other distances. \nGordon's book is designed to get you to the starting line of a marathon being well informed\, uninjured and ready to have a safe and enjoyable race! It offers a wealth of information from a National Class Marathoner. \nReaders' Reviews: \n"This is an excellent running book. It has a tremendous amount of information on nutrition\, cross training\, speed work and a very easily tolerated training schedule for preparation for a marathon. I have used this book for years\, and it still seems to work." \n"You probably know there are a lot of "how to" guides out there. This one isn't for everyone. But if you're looking for more than just a finisher's medal\, Bloch offers you the insight of her years of championship experience. Even beginners will find useful training schedules... and the tips here will help anyone improve their finish." \n"I especially enjoyed that the first chapter included testimonials from various ordinary people about their first marathon. Also there is a countdown chapter\, telling you what to do in the month\, weeks\, days\, and last day before the marathon; as well as a whole chapter dedicated to the race itself." \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat: DEBS' Book Club\n\n\n\nWhen: 6:30 pm Monday\, October 23rd\, 2023 \nWhere: at Telio Taverna at (Good Enough to Eat) 520 Columbus Avenue at 85th St\, New York\, NY 10024 \n***PLEASE BRING CASH in various denominations to pay for your meal/drinks. SUMMARY:Volunteer Pacer | Last 10 Miles Run
DESCRIPTION:NY Flyers Last 10 Miles Supported Long Run \n\n\n\nWhen: Sunday\, October 22nd\, 2023 \n\n\n\nWho: Members and Non-members \n\n\n\nOrganizer: New York Flyers Running Club \n\n\n\nQuestions: contact deb.nyflyers@gmail.com \n\n\n\nDetails: Come out and support our team by volunteering to be a pacer at our Last 10 Miles of the NYC Marathon Training Run. Please note: we would like our pacers to do the full 10 miles. PACE GROUPS: We need at least one pacer for each group starting at 8:00 minutes/mile through 12:30 minutes/mile at 30 second intervals. If you would like to be a Pacer for a slower Pace (or a faster one)\, for a Walking Pace or a Run/Walk Pace\, please contact us. \n\n\n\nIf you have never paced\, you will be paired with an experienced partner. This is a great opportunity to lead a group of runners and enjoy the camaraderie of group and the gratitude of other runners. Remember that when you pace\, you should choose a pace at least 30 seconds slower than your own training pace to ensure that you can keep the pace for the length of the run. \n\n\n\nAs a pacer\, you have group members relying on you to keep to the designated pace\, so wanting to go faster because everything feels good during the run is a feeling you will need to ignore - you need to keep the pace at all times (unless hurt or exhausted\, of course). Pacing is a wonderful experience - if you've never done it before\, you will be hooked\, just like many of our longstanding pacers are.    \n\n\n\nFor details about the run\, please see the EVENT PAGE \n\n\n\nFor VIEWING only\, is a spreadsheet showing the available empty slots for PACERS. You can then sign up below and tell us which pace you prefer - based on the empty slots shown on the spreadsheet. Thank you! \n\n\n\nQuestions: contact deb.nyflyers@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Volunteer Pacer | Three Bridges Run #2
DESCRIPTION:New York Flyers Three Bridges Supported Long Run \n\n\n\nWhen: Sunday\, October 15th\, 2023 \n\n\n\nWho: Members and Non-members: Non-members who Volunteer to Pace\, run for FREE. \n\n\n\nFlyer Members who volunteer will receive a gift card to Fleet Feet as a thank you for their service. \n\n\n\nOrganizer: NY Flyers \n\n\n\nQuestions: contact deb.nyflyers@gmail.com \n\n\n\n*****PLEASE VIEW THE SPREADSHEET (link below) TO SEE WHICH PACE GROUPS STILL NEED PACERS. AT THIS POINT\, SOME PACER OPPORTUNITIES ARE ALREADY FILLED. THANK YOU.**** \n\n\n\nDetails: Come out and support our team\, and help make this NY Flyers Long Run the best long run in the city by volunteering to be a pacer. We would like our pacers to do the full 20 miles\, but depending on the participation we get\, it might be possible to shorten it by finishing at the Manhattan end of the Queensboro Bridge (16 miles)\, the Queens end of the Queensboro Bridge (15 miles)\, but we have to ensure we don't leave groups without pacers. \n\n\n\nFor details about the run\, please see the EVENT PAGE \n\n\n\nSign up below and list your preferred TRAINING pace (not your race pace). \n\n\n\nFor details about the run\, please see the EVENT PAGE \n\n\n\nSign up below and list your preferred TRAINING pace (not your race pace). The PACING coordinator will get back to you to finalize. \n\n\n\n*****PLEASE VIEW THE SPREADSHEET (link below) TO SEE WHICH PACE GROUPS STILL NEED PACERS. AT THIS POINT\, SOME PACER OPPORTUNITIES ARE ALREADY FILLED. THANK YOU.**** \n\n\n\nFor VIEWING only\, is a spreadsheet showing the available empty slots for PACERS. You can then sign up below and tell us which pace you prefer - based on the empty slots shown on the spreadsheet. Thank you! \n\n\n\nQuestions: contact deb.nyflyers@gmail.com
