SUMMARY:May 23\, 2022 | DEBS' Book Club Zoom Event
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to have NY Flyers Members and Non Members join us for a ZOOM session with author\, ROBYN K. SCHNEIDER\, to discus her book\, "SILENT RUNNING: Our Family's Journey to the Finish Line with Autism." \n\n”The Schneider family represents the unrelenting determination of the human spirit that we find in long distance runners. We see time and again how those who discover the power of running are able to transform and improve their lives\, and this story is a profound representation of running's life-changing qualities. Silent Running celebrates Alex and Jamie's extraordinary and inspirational journey while encapsulating the everyday essence of a runner -- the triumphs\, struggles\, and joy that can emanate from putting one foot in front of another."  -- Mary Wittenberg\, Former President & CEO New York Road Runners\, Race Director NYC Marathon\nAt 21 months old\, identical twin brothers Alex and Jamie were diagnosed with autism. It was 1992\, a time when autism was far from a household word. Robyn and her husband Allan were heartsick\, but determined to find a cure for their sons\, and thus their journey into the world of autism began.  \n\nIn Silent Running\, Robyn Schneider takes readers on an intimate journey from a double diagnosis of autism\, through many years of heartache\, to a place of joy. Silent Running is a story of unrelenting love\, of parents who never stop chasing after the silver lining\, intent on finding happiness for their sons.\n \nAnd find happiness they do—in running. In Schneider’s moving memoir\, readers see Alex and Jamie transformed through running\, their lives enriched. And eventually they reach a place where running\, rather than autism\, defines them. Along the journey\, both Robyn and Allan face their own personal challenges. Allan begins running to help manage his symptoms of multiple sclerosis\, and Robyn\, while undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer\, laces up her own running shoes\, determined to run her way to recovery—for her family and for herself. And she hasn’t stopped.\n\n“Silent Running is an inspiration. Robyn Schneider is a warrior who has overcome one heartbreaking setback after another\, from her twin sons' diagnosis of   autism to her husband's MS to her own diagnosis with breast cancer. But through it all Robyn and her family never gave up on life\, instead finding joy and healing through running. You won't want to put this book down."  -- Geri Barish\,  Three-time breast cancer survivor & Founder 1 in 9\, The Long Island Breast Cancer Coalition \n\nWhat: DEBS' Book Club - Zoom Session with the AUTHOR! \nWhen: 7:00 pm Monday\, May 23\, 2022 \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nDuration: Approx. 60 minutes \nGroup Size: unlimited \nJOIN ZOOM MEETING at:  \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89142038435?pwd=dTZtNW5SVXVKQWUvQWNFZzlZc2xEZz09Meeting ID: 891 4203 8435Passcode: 077174One tap mobile+16465588656\,\,89142038435# US (New York)+13126266799\,\,89142038435# US (Chicago)Dial by your location        +1 646 558 8656 US (New York)        +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)        +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)        +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)        +1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)        +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) \nYou can order the book (new\, used or on Kindle)  HERE \nView Attendees HERE \n

SUMMARY:July 12\, 2022 | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our next Book Club event will be held at the outdoor seating area at Good Enough To Eat Restaurant.  The book we will be discussing is\, "The Long Run" by Matthew Long - which is about a New York City firefighter's emotional and inspiring memoir of learning to run again after a debilitating accident\, based on the wildly popular March 2009 article in Runner's World. \nOn the morning of December 22\, 2005\, Matt Long was cycling to work in the early morning when he was struck by and sucked under a 20-ton bus making an illegal turn. The injuries he sustained pushed him within inches of his life. Miraculously\, more than 40 operations and months later\, Matt was able to start his recovery. In spite of the severity of his injuries\, Matt found the psychological consequences of the accident nearly as hard to process. He would no longer be able to compete at the highest level. In the 18 months before the accident\, he had competed in more than 20 events including several triathlons and marathons and had qualified for running's most prestigious race\, the Boston Marathon. After the accident\, his doctor told him he'd be lucky if he could even walk without a cane. \nThe Long Run is an emotional and incredibly honest story about Matt's determination to fight through fear\, despair\, loneliness\, and intense physical and psychological pain to regain the life he once had. The book chronicles Matt's road to recovery as he teaches himself to walk again and\, a mere three years later\, to run in the 2008 New York City Marathon—a gimpy seven-and-a-half hour journey through the five boroughs. "Running saved my life\," Matt says\, and his embrace of the running community and insistence on competing in the marathon has inspired many\, turning him into a symbol of hope and recovery for untold numbers of others. \nWhen: 6:30 pm Tuesday\, July 12th\, 2022 \nWhere: Good Enough To Eat Restaurant at: 520 Columbus Ave\, New York\, NY 10024 (at 85th St) \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nGroup Size: 20 \nYou can order the book  HERE \nView Attendees HERE

SUMMARY:Volunteer Pacer | Three Bridges Run #1
DESCRIPTION:NY Flyers Three Bridges Supported Long Run \n\n\n\nYou can view the available empty slots for PACERS HERE \n\n\n\nAnd then you can sign up below and tell us which pace you prefer. Thank you! \n\n\n\nWhen: Sunday\, August 28th\, 2022 \n\n\n\nWho: Members and Non-members : Non-members who Volunteer to Pace\, run for FREE. Volunteers will receive a gift card to Fleet Feet as a thank you for their service. \n\n\n\nOrganizer: NY Flyers \n\n\n\nQuestions: contact deb.nyflyers@gmail.com \n\n\n\nDetails: Come out and support our team\, and help make this NY Flyers Long Run the best long run in the city by volunteering to be a pacer. We would like our pacers to do the full 20 miles\, but depending on the participation we get\, it might be possible to shorten it by finishing at the Manhattan end of the Queensboro Bridge (16 miles)\, the Queens end of the Queensboro Bridge (15 miles)\, but we have to ensure we don't leave groups without pacers.   PACE GROUPS: We need at least one pacer for each group starting at 8:00 minutes/mile through 12:30 minutes/mile at 30 second intervals. If you would like to be a Pacer for a slower Pace (or a faster one)\, for a Walking Pace or a Run/Walk Pace\, please contact us. \n\n\n\nIf you have never paced\, you will be paired with an experienced partner. This is a great opportunity to lead a group of runners and enjoy the camaraderie of group and the gratitude of other runners. Remember that when you pace\, you should choose a pace at least 30 seconds slower than your own training pace to ensure that you can keep the pace for the length of the run. \n\n\n\nAs a pacer\, you have group members relying on you to keep to the designated pace\, so wanting to go faster because everything feels good during the run is a feeling you will need to ignore - you need to keep the pace at all times (unless hurt or exhausted\, of course). Pacing is a wonderful experience - if you've never done it before\, you will be hooked\, just like many of our longstanding pacers are.    \n\n\n\nFor details about the run\, please see the EVENT PAGE \n\n\n\nSign up below and list your preferred TRAINING RUN pace. The PACING coordinator will get back to you to finalize. \n\n\n\nYou can view the available empty slots needed for PACERS HERE \n\n\n\nAnd then you can sign up below and tell us which pace you prefer. Thank you!

SUMMARY:9/20/22 | DEBS' Book Club Event
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at our Book Club event where the author\, John Hanc\, will attend and speak about his book and adventure\, "The Coolest Race on Earth." We will meet in person at the restaurant\, Good Enough to Eat (see details below). \nWhat would induce hundreds of people from all over the world to spend thousands of dollars each and two weeks of their lives just to run a marathon in Antarctica? Especially one with a reputation as the toughest marathon on Earth?   John Hanc may have the answer. When he turned 50 he gave himself the birthday present to end all others--a trip to the end of the Earth to run his most unforgettable race. \nThe Coolest Race on Earth is both Hanc’s story and the story of the Antarctica Marathon\, first held in 1995 and now an annual event that sells out years in advance. It’s full of humor\, adventure\, and inspiring characters--including a wheelchair-bound competitor\, three record-breaking grandmothers\, and an ex-Marine who described the race as “the hardest thing I ever did in my life\, next to Vietnam.” \nMuddy\, cold\, hilly\, the race is by all accounts horrible--up and down a melting glacier twice\, past curious penguins and hostile skuas\, and finally to a bleak finish line. Even the best runners take longer to run the Antarctica Marathon than any other. \nYet the allure of marathon running combined with the fascinating reputation of the Last Continent has persuaded runners to brave a trip across the world’s most turbulent body of water\, the Drake Passage\, to a land of extinct volcanoes and craggy mountain peaks\, lost explorers and isolated scientists\, penguin rookeries and whale sightings\, all for a chance to run those crazy 26.2 miles. The Coolest Race on Earth brings the world’s most difficult marathon to life in a book that’s not only a ripping read\, but also a deeply funny meditation on what makes people run. \nWhen: 6:30 pm Tuesday\, September 20th\, 2022 \nWhere: Good Enough To Eat Restaurant at: 520 Columbus Ave\, New York\, NY 10024 (at 85th St) \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nGroup Size: 22 \nYou can order the book (new\, used and on Kindle) HERE \nView Attendees HERE

DESCRIPTION:Please join us at our Book Club event where the author\, Nary Ly\, will attend and speak about her inspirational story\, "Survivor\, Scientist\, Olympian."  We will meet in person at the restaurant\, Good Enough to Eat (see details below). \nHow a Child of the Killing Fields Ran an Olympic Marathon and Inspired Her Broken Nation is a poignant and inspiring memoir of success against extreme odds. SUMMARY:Volunteer Pacer | Last 10 Miles Run
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT SEE EITHER THE "RSVP" OR "TICKETS" OPTION BELOW\, WE ARE WORKING ON RESOLVING THESE ISSUES. PLEASE CHECK BACK LATER TO REGISTER. THERE ARE PLENTY OF REMAINING OPENINGS. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE. \n\n\n\nNY Flyers Last 10 Miles Supported Long Run \n\n\n\nWhen: Sunday\, October 23rd\, 2022 \n\n\n\nWho: Members and Non-members: Non-members who Volunteer to Pace\, run for FREE. \n\n\n\nFlyer Members who volunteer will receive a gift card to Fleet Feet as a thank you for their service. \n\n\n\nOrganizer: NY Flyers \n\n\n\nQuestions: contact deb.nyflyers@gmail.com \n\n\n\nDetails: Come out and support our team by volunteering to be a pacer at our Last 10 Miles of the NYC Marathon Training Run. Please note: we would like our pacers to do the full 10 miles. \n\n\n\nA view-only list of Pacers is: HERE

SUMMARY:NY Flyers Food Drive Fundraiser 2022
DESCRIPTION:2022 NY Flyer Food Drive Fundraiser\, benefiting City Harvest \n\n\n\nFifteen years of Sparkle and Shine. \n\n\n\nIn addition to being the largest running club in New York City\, the New York Flyers support a variety of community-based and charitable causes throughout the year. Since 2008\, the Flyers have partnered with local food banks to help alleviate hunger in our own community.  \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 brought with it illness\, stress\, uncertainty\, family struggles\, job losses\, the passing of loved ones\, and a staggering death toll worldwide.  While New York is well on the road to economic recovery\, food insecurity for people who were living near or under the poverty margin before the pandemic continues.  Today\, more than 1.5 million people in New York City\, including one in three children\, do not have enough to eat.  \n\n\n\nDuring 2020\, City Harvest expanded its existing food rescue and delivery\, nutrition education\, and healthy retail programs by repackaging and distributing 191 million pounds of food (twice its capacity for the same period a year before the pandemic)\, and supporting 32 new emergency food distribution sites in high-need neighborhoods\, including feeding frontline medical workers at sites close to hospitals. \n\n\n\nIf you can\, please help City Harvest continue its mission of providing access to healthy\, nutritious food by participating in the 2022 Flyer Food Drive Fundraiser.  Click the DONATE NOW button to be directed to the donation site. \n\n\n\n\nDONATE NOW\n\n\n\n\nThis year’s fundraising drive starts on Sunday\, November 13 and closes at 9:00 PM on Friday\, December 18. \n\n\n\nFrequently Asked Questions \n\n\n\nWhy City Harvest?City Harvest was started in 1982 by a group of ordinary New Yorkers who were troubled how much fresh\, usable food was thrown out on a daily basis by restaurants. This group of volunteers rounded up friends and cars to pick up the discarded food in order to transport it to where it was needed the most. City Harvest currently supports fresh food distribution to a network of more than 500 food pantries\, soup kitchens\, and other community partners. City Harvest also sponsors programs to increase both nutritional knowledge and the availability of affordable\, nutritious food in low-income communities. Best of all\, 93 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to helping people in need. \n\n\n\nIs there a minimum donation? No. Every dollar given is greatly appreciated and goes towards stemming the tide of hunger in New York City. \n\n\n\nHow much are we trying to raise? We set our goal for 2022 at $3500. In the twelve years the fundraiser has operated\, we have often raised significantly more. \n\n\n\nIs my donation tax deductible?Yes\, if you itemize your deductions. \n\n\n\nCan I apply for employer matching?Yes\, if your employer supports this. Please follow this link for details. If you send in a matching gifts form from your employer\, please note that the donation is in support of the 2021 New York Flyers Holiday Food Drive Fundraiser \n\n\n\nTogether\, we can help support our neighbors and fight the war on hunger this holiday season. We hope you join the battle.
