SUMMARY:May 20th | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in-person session to discuss the book\, "Running for My Life: One Lost Boy's Journey from the Killing Fields of Sudan to the Olympic Games" by Lopez Lomong. \n"Running for My Life" is not a story about Africa or track and field athletics. It is about outrunning the devil and achieving the impossible: faith\, diligence\, and the desire to give back. It is the American dream come true and a stark reminder that saving one can help to save thousands more. \nLopez Lomong chronicles his inspiring ascent from a barefoot lost boy of the Sudanese Civil War to a Nike sponsored athlete on the US Olympic Team. Though most of us fall somewhere between the catastrophic lows and dizzying highs of Lomong's incredible life\, every reader will find in his story the human spark to pursue dreams that might seem unthinkable\, even from circumstances that might appear hopeless. \n\n\n\nHere are a few Reviews from over 2\,000 Readers: \nReader 1: "This book inspired me. I recently participated in a "mere" 5k race for the first time in about 20 years. I did terribly and was in severe pain practically the entire race - but I was determined to finish. I prayed and thought of Lopez's journey and hardships and told myself that my pain was nothing compared to what the Sudanese people experienced. I finished my 5k with God & Lopez's help!!!" \nReader 2: "I heard of Lopez’s story after doing one of my runs with the Nike Running Club app and I knew I had to pick up his book. I have to say\, his story is a true inspiration: teaching you to NEVER give up and to always continue to move forward with your head held high! Honestly\, a must read!" \nReader 3: "I promise\, after reading even the first part of this book\, you will think twice before you complain about something as inconsequential as someone getting your parking space or the fast food server forgetting your "no mustard" instruction for your hamburger." \nReader 4: "Lopez Lomong covers a great distance in this book\, from fleeing Sudan as a Lost Boy\, to running 13 miles daily so he could play soccer in a refugee camp\, to adjusting to life in America\, and finally to the Olympics. He says his greatest accomplishment was to graduate from college." \nReader 5: "Many times Lopez survived because of the help of others around him. He escaped becoming a child soldier because 3 older Sudanese boys from his village helped him escape. He banded together with other young boys in the refugee camp to make a "family" who together protected their small monthly allotment of food. At one point\, he was going down into depression when someone helped him try to forget his parents. Especially challenging to a Western reader is the model of his American "parents." Despite its overwhelming subject\, this book is not drowned in self-pity\, but is filled with hope. It is written in direct\, readable style which helps it penetrate right to the heart." \n\nYou can order the book in various formats: hardcover\, paperback\, Kindle or Audiobook HERE. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat: DEBS' Book Club\n\n\n\nWhen: 6:30 pm - 8:00pm\, Monday\, May 20th\, 2024 \nWhere: at Telio Taverna (Good Enough to Eat) at 520 Columbus Avenue at 85th St\, New York\, NY 10024 \n***PLEASE BRING CASH in various denominations to pay for your meal/drinks. THANK YOU!*** \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nOpen to Members and Non-Members \nTo sign up\, please email us at Deb Saat \nView Attendees HERE.

SUMMARY:Monumental Women Run
DESCRIPTION:Starting Point: Time Warner Building \nPaces: 9:00 to 9:30 mm and 11:00 to 11:30 mm \nDistances: 5 to 15 miles \nOrganizer: Brad Goz \nThere are 145 public monuments dedicated to historic men in the City of New York.  There are six monuments dedicated to eight women.  On Saturday morning March 29\, the New York Flyers will salute these women with our Monumental Women Run\, a 5 to 12 mile celebration that will visit these monuments and many more sites that highlight the contributions woman have made to our City and the world.   \nThe run will offer groups at 9+ and 11+ minute/mile paces.  While much of the event takes place on city streets\, most of our tour runs in or next to parks to help ensure a steady run.   \nTo beat traffic and accommodate both 7AM and 9AM Flyer groups that run on Saturday morning\, this special run will begin at 8AM.   \nThere’s a bit of good news in the limited New York tribute to women.  When you honor only eight women from the past 800 years\, chances are they will be extraordinary and\, indeed\, each woman conveys a compelling story.  I fell in love with every one of them while researching this run.  I think you will as well.  Visit their monuments and share their stories on one of the most exciting runs you will ever enjoy in the world’s greatest city. \n  \nRSVP Here: Please fill out this form to let us know you are coming.  \nAlternative End Points: \n  5 miles: 125th Street & train back to start \n  9 miles: 72nd & Riverside & Return to Park \n  11.5 miles: Bryant Square Park  \n  12.5 miles: Back to Columbus Circle \n(9:00 M/M Pace runners run 15% farther than distances above.) \nMany teammates will join for breakfast after the run. Point TBD!  \nVolunteers Needed: If you are interested in volunteering for this event please fill out the volunteer form.

SUMMARY:March 19th | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: ZOOM SESSION BEGINS AT 7:00 PM & IN PERSON GROUP ZOOM EVENT AT FRED'S RESTAURANT BEGINS AT 6:30 PM \nThe Humiliation Tour  by Jeffrey Recker  \nThe Debs are very happy to introduce our next book which is a very entertaining and engaging novel by Jeffrey Recker who will be joining us via ZOOM to discuss his book. In this humorously poignant coming-of-age story\, a star high school cross-country runner finds himself the subject of a humiliating life. Billy\, entangled in a web of bureaucratic idiocy and in trouble with the law\, enters into a quirky and tumultuous relationship with his attorney\, and later with a saucy pink-haired co-worker\, only to discover his empty pursuits mask his real struggles and the angst of growing up. \nPercolating within him\, he comes to realize the one true love of his life—his childhood best friend. He uncovers his athletic potential with her support\, and the haunts of an ancestor who had a similar gift. Through his great grandfather’s story—one of unfinished business played out during the Great Depression—Billy is led back to race on the world’s grandest stage…Boston.  \nAnd who else but Bill Rodgers highly recommends Jeffrey's book: "I love this story and wish it for everybody. Recker showcases his story telling talent by crafting a humorous tribute to the angst of growing up that is both entertaining and heartwarming while capturing the spirit of running through generations." \nWhere: You can join our zoom session with the Author - from either the back room as a group at Fred's Restaurant or from wherever you choose. The program is limited to 50 runners and typically sells out quickly. \nWhat: NY Flyers' Winter/Spring Marathon Training Program (MTP)\, led by Head Coach Amy Sitar and Coach Jim Purvis\, is designed to help members prepare for their spring goal races. \n\n16 coached practices.\n16-week training plan based on your training history and goals.\nAssigned group coach to guide/support you throughout the season.\nCoaching support via email and on V.O2.\n\nThe NY Flyers’ Winter/Spring Training Program is available to runners of all levels. Our coaching program prides itself on proper training methodology\, great customer service and making practices fun and challenging at the same time!  \nTraining Plan: All participants will receive a personalized training plan geared towards their season goal(s). The 16-week training plan will start January 3rd and ends April 17th. Participants fill out an athlete survey so an MTP coach can review their recent training/racing history\, goals\, etc. before personalizing their plan. Training plans are published to each participant’s V.O2 calendar\, which includes the ability to manage your training on the mobile app\, website and/or a PDF copy. V.O2 also syncs with GPS so you can easily manage your prescribed workouts and actual splits. Your MTP coach will help manage your training calendar\, which will also include recommendations on cross training\, strength\, mobility exercises and nutrition\, etc.  \nCoaching Support: Each participant is assigned a “group coach” to guide them through the training program. Participants receive a coaching invite so their assigned coach can manage their training calendar. Coaches leave comments\, feedback and are available by email to help motivate and make adjustments to participants’ training along the way. \nPractices: Members gather between 6:30-6:40 pm at the Maine Monument at Columbus Circle. Runners will depart from there to the park promptly at 6:40 pm. Bag check is available on the second floor of the Time Warner Center at the Fleet Feet store. \nAll athletes train with their assigned coach and group (broken down by experience and fitness level) but at individualized paces prescribed in their training plan. Practices typically finish 7:45-8:00 pm with some mobility exercises (weather permitting). \nSocials: TBD. Typically\, we meet at least once per month for a post-practice organized social gathering at a nearby bar/restaurant. \nWhen: First Practice is Wednesday\, January 3rd\, 2024 \nWhere: Central Park (Columbus Circle) every Wednesday evening \nOrganizer: New York Flyers \nCost: $325 (no refunds) \nFor more detailed information\, see our Training Page. \nQuestions: aksitar@gmail.com \nBy purchasing your ticket to WTP\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to the attached Liability Waiver and our Code of Conduct \nIf you're not quite sure if MTP is right for you\, please consider signing up for our Winter/Spring SpeedPass program. \nClick HERE to see who's going (this list is updated manually) \nNOTE: YOU MUST BE LOGGED IN ON THE FLYERS WEBSITE IN ORDER TO SIGN UP

SUMMARY:NY Flyers Food Drive Fundraiser 2023
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Food Drive: 2023 New York Flyers Holiday Food Drive Fundraiser - City Harvest \n\n\n\nSweet Sixteen! \n\n\n\nTurning sixteen is a rite of passage for many\, and this year the Flyer Holiday Food Drive Fundraiser reaches this milestone anniversary.  Since 2008\, the Flyers have raised over $50\,000 in total to support local food banks in alleviating hunger in our own community. \n\n\n\nInflation persists throughout the US\, and as we approach the end of the year\, higher prices for just about everything continue to take a hefty bite out of all of our wallets.  According to April's True Cost of Living Report (copy and paste https://unitedwaynyc.org/true-cost-of-living/ into your browser for access)\, 50% of working-age households in New York City have difficulty affording the most basic living expenses of rent\, utilities\, and food.  Visits to New York City food pantries and soup kitchens\, which surged during the pandemic\, remain 60% higher than pre-pandemic levels.  Today\, more than 1.2 million people in New York City\, including one in five children\, do not have enough to eat. \n\n\n\nSince its inception over forty years ago\, City Harvest has distributed over a billion pounds of food to needy New Yorkers. Today\, City Harvest food trucks roll through the streets seven days a week to provide access to healthy\, nutritious food to the people who need it most. Please help support the mission by participating in the 2023 Flyers Holiday Food Drive Fundraiser. This year’s fundraising drive starts on Sunday\, November 12 and closes at 9:00 PM on Sunday\, December 17. \n\n\n\nAbout City Harvest \n\n\n\nCity Harvest is New York’s first and largest food rescue organization\, helping to feed millions of New Yorkers who struggle to put meals on their tables. This year\, City Harvest will rescue 75 million pounds of fresh\, nutritious food and deliver it—free of charge—to hundreds of food pantries\, soup kitchens\, community partners and Mobile Markets across the five boroughs. City Harvest also works alongside community partners to boost community capacity\, expand nutrition education\, and strengthen local food systems. For over forty years\, City Harvest has been there to feed our city—one day\, one meal\, one New Yorker at a time. \n\n\n\nEvery $1 donated helps City Harvest feed two New Yorkers for a day. By donating\, you’ll help keep City Harvest’s trucks on the road and filled with nutritious food for our neighbors in need. \n\n\n\nClick “Donate Now” to make a tax-deductible contribution. Thank you for your compassion\, generosity\, and support! \n\n\n\nThis year’s fundraising drive starts on Sunday\, November 12 and closes at 9:00 PM on Friday\, December 17 \n\n\n\nVirtual Food Drive: 2023 New York Flyers Holiday Food Drive Fundraiser - City Harvest \n\n\n\nTogether\, we can help support our neighbors and fight the war on hunger this holiday season. We hope you join the battle.

SUMMARY:November 5 | Project Finish
DESCRIPTION:PROJECT FINISH 2023 \n\nEvery year\, NYRR invites everyone to come to the finish line hours after most of the runners have crossed and are home or back at their hotels showered and well-fed to help cheer in the very last runners on the course. We'll be gathering at the bleachers leading up to the finish on the west side of the course.\nhttps://www.villagevoice.com/project-finish-cheered-the.../\nhttps://www.instagram.com/projectfinishnyc/\n\nHosts: Hiromi Nobata \n  \n

SUMMARY:Central Park Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:DATE/TIME: SATURDAY\, NOVEMBER 4th\, 10AM - NOON \n\n\n\nWHAT: Past events have included raking\, planting\, pruning\, painting\, weeding\, and more. \n\n\n\nWHERE: TBD at a location in Central Park \n\n\n\nWHY: Heather Marcellis launched these events for the Flyers with Central Park Conservancy (CPC) in 2004\, and she and Dave Kleckner have co-led together since 2010. The intent remains to give back and help maintain the beauty that is Central Park\, where so many of us do so much of our running. We've held these events as often as 2-3 times per year\, and not since the pandemic\, but just got the go-ahead from CPC to resume. \n\n\n\nWHY ELSE: Camaraderie and Cookies (Heather will be baking and bringing her extraordinary cookies once again)  \n\n\n\nRegistration: Procedures have changed. CPC no longer is limiting this to NY Flyers participants. Rather it is FIRST COME FIRST SERVE via the CPC website. So please only register if you know you can make it\, but please don't delay since the event is open to the public and will sell out -- so if you don't act quickly you may get closed out. \n\n\n\nYou can register HERE \n\n\n\nNOTE: Once you register\, PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO DAVE KLECKNER at: blogmaster@nyflyers.org so we can compile a list of everyone attending this event. \n\n\n\nWe hope to see you there!-- DAVE KLECKNER
