SUMMARY:July 12\, 2022 | DEBS' Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our next Book Club event will be held at the outdoor seating area at Good Enough To Eat Restaurant.  The book we will be discussing is\, "The Long Run" by Matthew Long - which is about a New York City firefighter's emotional and inspiring memoir of learning to run again after a debilitating accident\, based on the wildly popular March 2009 article in Runner's World. \nOn the morning of December 22\, 2005\, Matt Long was cycling to work in the early morning when he was struck by and sucked under a 20-ton bus making an illegal turn. The injuries he sustained pushed him within inches of his life. Miraculously\, more than 40 operations and months later\, Matt was able to start his recovery. In spite of the severity of his injuries\, Matt found the psychological consequences of the accident nearly as hard to process. He would no longer be able to compete at the highest level. In the 18 months before the accident\, he had competed in more than 20 events including several triathlons and marathons and had qualified for running's most prestigious race\, the Boston Marathon. After the accident\, his doctor told him he'd be lucky if he could even walk without a cane. \nThe Long Run is an emotional and incredibly honest story about Matt's determination to fight through fear\, despair\, loneliness\, and intense physical and psychological pain to regain the life he once had. The book chronicles Matt's road to recovery as he teaches himself to walk again and\, a mere three years later\, to run in the 2008 New York City Marathon—a gimpy seven-and-a-half hour journey through the five boroughs. "Running saved my life\," Matt says\, and his embrace of the running community and insistence on competing in the marathon has inspired many\, turning him into a symbol of hope and recovery for untold numbers of others. \nWhen: 6:30 pm Tuesday\, July 12th\, 2022 \nWhere: Good Enough To Eat Restaurant at: 520 Columbus Ave\, New York\, NY 10024 (at 85th St) \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nGroup Size: 20 \nYou can order the book  HERE \nView Attendees HERE

SUMMARY:June 11 | Mini Cheer Zone
DESCRIPTION:NY Flyers NYRR Mini-Cheer Zone \n\n\n\nDetails: Let's get a big Flyer turnout for the 50th Anniversary of Mini\, the world's original woman's-only road race. It is very special to be able to return to New York City after my marathon victories in New York and Boston to be a part of the 50th anniversary of this race. \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, June 11th - Professional wheel chair division starts at 7:50 and field at 8:00 A.M. Runners will enter park around mile 1\, and we will be at about mile 6- so the professional women will go by our cheer zone at approximately 8:30. \n\n\n\nWhere: CHANGE OF LOCATION. SUMMARY:May 23\, 2022 | DEBS' Book Club Zoom Event
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to have NY Flyers Members and Non Members join us for a ZOOM session with author\, ROBYN K. SCHNEIDER\, to discus her book\, "SILENT RUNNING: Our Family's Journey to the Finish Line with Autism." \n\n”The Schneider family represents the unrelenting determination of the human spirit that we find in long distance runners. We see time and again how those who discover the power of running are able to transform and improve their lives\, and this story is a profound representation of running's life-changing qualities. Silent Running celebrates Alex and Jamie's extraordinary and inspirational journey while encapsulating the everyday essence of a runner -- the triumphs\, struggles\, and joy that can emanate from putting one foot in front of another."  -- Mary Wittenberg\, Former President & CEO New York Road Runners\, Race Director NYC Marathon\nAt 21 months old\, identical twin brothers Alex and Jamie were diagnosed with autism. It was 1992\, a time when autism was far from a household word. Robyn and her husband Allan were heartsick\, but determined to find a cure for their sons\, and thus their journey into the world of autism began.  \n\nIn Silent Running\, Robyn Schneider takes readers on an intimate journey from a double diagnosis of autism\, through many years of heartache\, to a place of joy. Silent Running is a story of unrelenting love\, of parents who never stop chasing after the silver lining\, intent on finding happiness for their sons.\n \nAnd find happiness they do—in running. In Schneider’s moving memoir\, readers see Alex and Jamie transformed through running\, their lives enriched. And eventually they reach a place where running\, rather than autism\, defines them. Along the journey\, both Robyn and Allan face their own personal challenges. Allan begins running to help manage his symptoms of multiple sclerosis\, and Robyn\, while undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer\, laces up her own running shoes\, determined to run her way to recovery—for her family and for herself. And she hasn’t stopped.\n\n“Silent Running is an inspiration. Robyn Schneider is a warrior who has overcome one heartbreaking setback after another\, from her twin sons' diagnosis of   autism to her husband's MS to her own diagnosis with breast cancer. But through it all Robyn and her family never gave up on life\, instead finding joy and healing through running. You won't want to put this book down."  -- Geri Barish\,  Three-time breast cancer survivor & Founder 1 in 9\, The Long Island Breast Cancer Coalition \n\nWhat: DEBS' Book Club - Zoom Session with the AUTHOR! \nWhen: 7:00 pm Monday\, May 23\, 2022 \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nDuration: Approx. 60 minutes \nGroup Size: unlimited \nJOIN ZOOM MEETING at:  \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89142038435?pwd=dTZtNW5SVXVKQWUvQWNFZzlZc2xEZz09Meeting ID: 891 4203 8435Passcode: 077174One tap mobile+16465588656\,\,89142038435# US (New York)+13126266799\,\,89142038435# US (Chicago)Dial by your location        +1 646 558 8656 US (New York)        +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)        +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)        +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)        +1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)        +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) \nYou can order the book (new\, used or on Kindle)  HERE \nView Attendees HERE \n

SUMMARY:March 21\, 2022 | DEBS' Book Club Zoom Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a ZOOM session with author\, DANA AYERS\, to discus her book\, "Confessions of an Unlikely Runner: A Guide to Racing and Obstacle Courses for the Averagely Fit and Halfway Dedicated." \nThis event is open to NY Flyers Members and Non Members. \nWe are delighted to have author\, DANA AYERS\, join us to share all her experiences and behind the scenes in writing her book - which is described as witty\, observant\, and full of cringe-worthy confessions and heartwarming encouragement\, Confessions celebrates both running and life. \nPart Bridget Jones\, part Forrest Gump\, Dana Ayers chronicles her awkward mishaps and adventures in transitioning from childhood bookworm to accidental accomplished athlete. Over the last 10 years\, Ayers has completed a vast array of races and endurance challenges. She runs them all while admittedly not getting much faster\, much thinner\, or much more disciplined — though she has managed to be on national television\, split open her pants\, and get electrocuted. Ayers intersperses her hilarious yet relatable struggles with insights about how and why she keeps running. \nA self-proclaimed ambassador of slow runners\, Ayers has completed dozens of endurance challenges\, including Tough Mudder\, the Ragnar Relay\, Muddy Buddy\, Warrior Dash\, Run Amuck\, the Army Ten-Miler\, the Country Music Marathon\, and many more mud runs\, obstacles courses\, and races. Her race descriptions will entertain seasoned runners and non-runners alike. Woven into the chaos of her running adventures is compassionate reassurance for anyone who feels like they aren’t fast enough\, athletic enough\, or strong enough to finish a tough race. Though told with humor\, Confessions’ stories share an underlying theme of Ayers’ serious reverence for the sport of running and the running community. Ayers describes experiences such as participating in a 1\,000-mile relay for Boston Marathon bombing victims\, and being overcome by emotion while observing wounded veterans struggling to finish a race. Her stories prove how life-enriching it can be to physically fight for something and to cheer on others who are doing the same.  \nWhat: DEBS' Book Club - Zoom Session with the AUTHOR! \nWhen: 7:00 pm Monday\, March 21\, 2022 \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nDuration: Approx. 60 minutes \nGroup Size: unlimited \nYou can order the book HERE \nView Attendees HERE \nRSVP below.

SUMMARY:January 13\, 2022 | DEBS' Book Club Zoom Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a ZOOM session with author\, GEOFFREY SIMPSON\, to discus his book\, The Slummer. \nThis event is open to NY Flyers Members and Non Members. \nIt is a compelling\, futuristic novel that features a sport scarcely written about: running.  \nSet in the year 2083\, Benjamin Brandt is among the millions of “slummers” who are relegated to poverty and struggle on the outskirts of society. As a minority growing up in the gritty underbelly of Cleveland’s Industrial Valley\, Ben sees the way genetically designed “elites” live only from a distance: from the shadows of public spaces people like him are forbidden to use\, and on TV\, where he watches the enhanced athletes compete at an extraordinary level. For years\, a national track championship has inspired Ben to ferociously cultivate his own talent as a runner. \nAs Ben logs miles through the potholed\, darkened streets of his community\, an idea takes hold of him that could turn his highly stratified society upside down. He isn’t prepared to lead a revolution; however\, he is prepared to run like a slummer with nothing to lose. \n"This is the first running book I've read that I think\, wow this is like peeking into my brain and my way of thinking. I will be reading it again and again." CHRIS SOLINSKY\, Former American Record Holder - 10\,000 m (26:59.60) \n"The Slummer's inspiring story pits the indomitable spirit of a runner against economic disparity and genetic engineering in a believable\, dystopian tomorrow." JONATHAN BEVERLY\, Editor in Chief - PodiumRunner \nWhat: DEBS' Book Club - Zoom Session with the AUTHOR! \nWhen: 7:00 pm Thursday\, January 13\, 2022 \nHosts: Deb Saat & Debi Unger \nDuration: Approx. 60 minutes \nGroup Size: unlimited \nYou can order the book HERE \nView Attendees HERE \nRSVP below.

Much like Bikila\, the running crews of North Manhattan and the Bronx are transforming the health of their communities by bringing our sport to every doorstep. They will be joined by the New York Flyers\, one of New York’s largest crews. Designed to touch at or close to the home base of many of our crews\, the routes explore the terrain of North Manhattan and the Bronx and remain easy to follow. \n\n\n\nBefore there was Ted Corbitt or Fred Lebow\, before Grete Waitz or Eliud Kipchoge\, Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia changed the world of running. In 1960\, Bikila broke the world Marathon record running the Rome Olympics Marathon…barefoot. His sensational performance and pictures of his bloodied finish captured the world’s imagination and put Marathon running on the global athletics map. Four years later\, Bikila wore running shoes to break his Rome record by 3 minutes in the Tokyo Olympics. Today\, New York Road Runners presents the Abebe Bikila Award to athletes or non-athletes who have made outstanding contributions to the world of running.

SUMMARY:NY Flyers Food Drive Fundraiser 2021
DESCRIPTION:2021 NY Flyer Food Drive Fundraiser\, benefiting City Harvest \n\n\n\nFourteen years and stronger than ever. \n\n\n\nIn addition to being the largest running club in New York City\, the New York Flyers support a variety of community-based and charitable causes throughout the year. Since 2008\, the Flyers have partnered with local food banks to help alleviate hunger in our own community.  \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 brought with it illness\, stress\, uncertainty\, family struggles\, job losses\, the passing of loved ones\, and a staggering death toll worldwide.  While New York is well on the road to economic recovery\, food insecurity for people who were living near or under the poverty margin before the pandemic continues.  Today\, more than 1.5 million people in New York City\, including one in three children\, do not have enough to eat.  \n\n\n\nDuring 2020\, City Harvest expanded its existing food rescue and delivery\, nutrition education\, and healthy retail programs by repackaging and distributing 191 million pounds of food (twice its capacity for the same period a year before the pandemic)\, and supporting 32 new emergency food distribution sites in high-need neighborhoods\, including feeding frontline medical workers at sites close to hospitals. \n\n\n\nIf you can\, please help City Harvest continue its mission of providing access to healthy\, nutritious food by participating in the 2021 Flyer Food Drive Fundraiser.  Click the DONATE NOW button to be directed to the donation site. \n\n\n\n\nDONATE NOW\n\n\n\n\nThis year’s fundraising drive starts on Sunday\, November 14 and closes at 9:00 PM on Friday\, December 17. \n\n\n\nFrequently Asked Questions \n\n\n\nWhy City Harvest?City Harvest was started in 1982 by a group of ordinary New Yorkers who were troubled how much fresh\, usable food was thrown out on a daily basis by restaurants. This group of volunteers rounded up friends and cars to pick up the discarded food in order to transport it to where it was needed the most. City Harvest currently supports fresh food distribution to a network of more than 500 food pantries\, soup kitchens\, and other community partners. City Harvest also sponsors programs to increase both nutritional knowledge and the availability of affordable\, nutritious food in low-income communities. Best of all\, 93 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to helping people in need. \n\n\n\nIs there a minimum donation? No. Every dollar given is greatly appreciated and goes towards stemming the tide of hunger in New York City. \n\n\n\nHow much are we trying to raise? We set our goal for 2021 at $3500. In the twelve years the fundraiser has operated\, we have often raised significantly more. \n\n\n\nIs my donation tax deductible?Yes\, if you itemize your deductions. \n\n\n\nCan I apply for employer matching?Yes\, if your employer supports this. Please follow this link for details. If you send in a matching gifts form from your employer\, please note that the donation is in support of the 2021 New York Flyers Holiday Food Drive Fundraiser \n\n\n\nTogether\, we can help support our neighbors and fight the war on hunger this holiday season. We hope you join the battle.

SUMMARY:NY Marathon | Honey Stinger Gel Station
DESCRIPTION:How to sign up on the NYRR website: Sign into your NYRR account- Use this link to find the volunteer positions.https://www.nyrr.org/GetInvolved/Volunteer/Opportunities... This is not a direct link to our shifts but a general page. Please make sure to select the Honey Stinger station labeled NY FLYERS. If you have any problems locating the shifts to sign up\, please message me and I'll try to walk you through it. Apply for the shift.***Please make sure to select "NY Flyers" under group name so the club gets credit. We get 1 non-complimentary entry to the following year's marathon for every 20 volunteers we bring out on marathon day*** \n\n\n\n** there will be 2 shifts (8am-2pm and 1pm-5:30pm) this year since an extended start process will require all stations to open earlier and stay open later. \n\n\n\nDetails: As we all now know the 50th New York City Marathon is ON! And as we have every year\, the NY Flyers will be staffing the Manhattan Honey Stinger Gel station and we need your help. If you are NOT signed up to run or think you may need to take a deferment this year\, please consider lining up with your fellow teammates to man the #1 Best Gel Station on marathon Sunday. Kimberly Alcock-Ainsworth\, Robb Cole and possibly John McCreesh will be co-captaining the station again this year and would love to have you on the line as a team handing out gels to 33\,000+ runners on marathon day. It's an AMAZING way to take part on marathon Sunday even if you're not running. \n\n\n\nIt's also a great location to arrange to meet friends and family who are running the marathon - just tell them to look for you at the Gel station and you will be able to greet them (with your course credentials) from the other side of the barricades. If you are running but have friends and family who will be cheering for you\, please consider asking them to volunteer with us. \n\n\n\nDue to new COVID protocols\, there will be a few changes to the scheduling (that we know of right now) - we'll update you as we receive word on any other changes. ** there will be 2 shifts (8am-2pm and 1pm-5:30pm) this year since an extended start process will require all stations to open earlier and stay open later. Please sign up for the one that works best for you. As always\, we can work with you if you need a little flexibility in arrival/departure time - just let us know.** the location is 93rd St and 1st Ave (approximately mile18) - the station runs for about 2 blocks. ** children are welcome - just be sure to sign them up using the selection "I am registering - for myself and my children" \n\n\n\nQuestions: email Hiromi Nobata \n\n\n\nNB: THIS YEAR ONLY\, race day course positions ARE 9+1 eligible volunteer shifts.
