In this humorously poignant coming-of-age story\, a star high school cross-country runner finds himself the subject of a humiliating life. Billy\, entangled in a web of bureaucratic idiocy and in trouble with the law\, enters into a quirky and tumultuous relationship with his attorney\, and later with a saucy pink-haired co-worker\, only to discover his empty pursuits mask his real struggles and the angst of growing up. \nPercolating within him\, he comes to realize the one true love of his life—his childhood best friend. He uncovers his athletic potential with her support\, and the haunts of an ancestor who had a similar gift. Through his great grandfather’s story—one of unfinished business played out during the Great Depression—Billy is led back to race on the world’s grandest stage…Boston.  \nAnd who else but Bill Rodgers highly recommends Jeffrey's book: "I love this story and wish it for everybody. Recker showcases his story telling talent by crafting a humorous tribute to the angst of growing up that is both entertaining and heartwarming while capturing the spirit of running through generations." \nWhere: You can join our zoom session with the Author - from either the back room as a group at Fred's Restaurant or from wherever you choose. So please only register if you know you can make it\, but please don't delay since the event is open to the public and will sell out -- so if you don't act quickly you may get closed out. \n\n\n\nYou can register HERE \n\n\n\nNOTE: Once you register\, PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO DAVE KLECKNER at: blogmaster@nyflyers.org so we can compile a list of everyone attending this event. \n\n\n\nWe hope to see you there!-- DAVE KLECKNER URL:https://nyflyers.org/event/central-park-volunteer-day-3/ CATEGORIES:Social,Special Event ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://nyflyers.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/volunteer-cp-may-23.jpeg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20231102T193000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20231102T220000 DTSTAMP:20240328T212953 CREATED:20230928T161135Z LAST-MODIFIED:20231029T134656Z UID:24088-1698953400-1698962400@nyflyers.org SUMMARY:Pre-Marathon Pasta Dinner | Guest Speaker: Bill Rodgers DESCRIPTION:NY Flyers Pre-Marathon Pasta Dinner \n\n\n\nWho: Open to Members \n\n\n\nCost: $60 \n\n\n\nWhere: Azalea Ristorante at: 224 West 51st Street\, New York\, NY 10019 \n\n\n\nFeatured Speaker: BILL RODGERS!!! Gordon qualified for the U.S. Olympic marathon trials in 1988\, 1992\, 1996\, 2000\, and 2004 and was a finalist in the 1992 U.S. Olympic 10\,000m trials. She has represented the U.S. internationally at the 10K\, half-marathon\, and marathon distances\, and has run a 1:11 half-marathon and a 2:33 marathon. Gordon has run more than 35 marathons (including eight New York City Marathons) and countless races at other distances. \nGordon's book is designed to get you to the starting line of a marathon being well informed\, uninjured and ready to have a safe and enjoyable race! It offers a wealth of information from a National Class Marathoner. \nReaders' Reviews: \n"This is an excellent running book. It has a tremendous amount of information on nutrition\, cross training\, speed work and a very easily tolerated training schedule for preparation for a marathon. I have used this book for years\, and it still seems to work." \n"You probably know there are a lot of "how to" guides out there. This one isn't for everyone. But if you're looking for more than just a finisher's medal\, Bloch offers you the insight of her years of championship experience. Even beginners will find useful training schedules... and the tips here will help anyone improve their finish." \n"I especially enjoyed that the first chapter included testimonials from various ordinary people about their first marathon. Also there is a countdown chapter\, telling you what to do in the month\, weeks\, days\, and last day before the marathon; as well as a whole chapter dedicated to the race itself." \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat: DEBS' Book Club\n\n\n\nWhen: 6:30 pm Monday\, October 23rd\, 2023 \nWhere: at Telio Taverna at (Good Enough to Eat) 520 Columbus Avenue at 85th St\, New York\, NY 10024 \n***PLEASE BRING CASH in various denominations to pay for your meal/drinks. You can read his book or just join in to ask questions and hear about his journeys across the U.S. \n"Frank Giannino wasn’t the best runner in high school\, not even close. He was too anxious\, too uncertain\, choking in nearly every big track meet. He sought attention as a chatterbox and showman\, waving snakes at his oldest sister’s friends while victimized by self-doubt that started in childhood and formed thick layers through adolescence and into adulthood. He had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. Frank only knew with certainty that he could run. He could run miles and miles without tiring or suffering. In town for the 1978 Boston Marathon\, a book jumped off the shelf at him. My Run Across the United States chronicled Don Shepherd’s story of running from Los Angeles to New York in 1964. Suddenly\, Frank had a goal. But running across America wasn’t enough for him. He needed to squash his battle with insecurity. He needed to break the world record for fastest transcontinental crossing on foot. When Frank failed to break the record on his first try\, he set out for his second crossing sixteen months later. It was an ordeal that would last 46 Days and remain a dominant factor for three ensuing decades that were laced with pain while he chased a greater goal: Happiness." \nFrank is a friend of Deb Saat's while attending the University of Oregon back in the '70's and we are very excited to have him speak about his wild adventures running across the U.S. We hope you can join our zoom session - from either the back room at Fred's Restaurant with a group or from wherever you choose. The intent remains to give back and help maintain the beauty that is Central Park\, where so many of us do so much of our running. We've held these events as often as 2-3 times per year\, and not since the pandemic\, but just got the go-ahead from CPC to resume. \n\n\n\nWHY ELSE: Camaraderie and Cookies (Heather will be baking and bringing her extraordinary cookies once again)  \n\n\n\nRegistration: Procedures have changed. CPC no longer is limiting this to NY Flyers participants. Rather it is first come first serve via the CPC website. So please only register if you know you can make it\, but please don't delay since the event is open to the public and will sell out -- so if you don't act quickly you may get closed out. \n\n\n\nYou can register HERE (Unfortunately\, this event quickly filled up and is currently unavailable.) \n\n\n\nNOTE: Once you register\, PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO DAVE KLECKNER at: blogmaster@nyflyers.org so we can compile a list of everyone attending this event. \n\n\n\nWe hope to see you there! \n\n\n\n***UPDATE (APRIL 12\, 2023): The event already is sold out\, however\, Central Park Conservancy said they'll accommodate 4 more Flyers beyond those who already registered by April 11th. \n\n\n\nSo please email me at blogmaster@nyflyers.org if you'd like to be one of the Lucky 4 to be added to the list of registrants -- FIRST COME FIRST SERVE  -- DAVE KLECKNER URL:https://nyflyers.org/event/central-park-volunteer-day/ CATEGORIES:Social,Special Event ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://nyflyers.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/CPC-Volunteers.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20230503T183000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20230503T200000 DTSTAMP:20240328T212953 CREATED:20230413T133640Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230413T134156Z UID:21727-1683138600-1683144000@nyflyers.org SUMMARY:May 3rd | DEBS' Book Club DESCRIPTION:"Good for a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man's World" \nA NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER \nFueled by her years as an elite runner and advocate for women in sports\, Lauren Fleshman offers her inspiring personal story and a rallying cry for reform of a sports landscape that is failing young female athletes. Written with heart and verve\, Good for a Girl is a joyful love letter to the running life\, a raw personal narrative of growth and change\, and a vital call to reimagine sports for young women. \n“Women’s sports have needed a manifesto for a very long time\, and with Lauren Fleshman’s Good for a Girl we finally have one.”—Malcolm Gladwell\, author of Outliers and David and Goliath \n“Good for a Girl is simultaneously a moving memoir and a call to action in how we think about—and train—girls and women in elite sports. It’s a must-read—for anyone who loves running\, for anyone who has a daughter\, and for anyone who cares about creating a better future for young women.”—Emily Oster\, author of Expecting Better\, Cribsheet\, and The Family Firm \nPart memoir\, part manifesto\, Good for a Girl is Fleshman’s story of falling in love with running as a girl\, being pushed to her limits and succumbing to devastating injuries\, and daring to fight for a better way for female athletes. Long gone are the days when women and girls felt lucky just to participate; Fleshman and women everywhere are waking up to the reality that they’re running\, playing\, and competing in a world that wasn’t made for them. Drawing on not only her own story but also emerging research on the physiology and psychology of young athletes\, of any gender\, Fleshman gives voice to the often-silent experience of the female athlete and argues that the time has come to rebuild our systems of competitive sport with women at their center. \nWhat: DEBS' Book Club \nWhen: 6:30 pm Wednesday\, May 3rd \nWhere: Fred's \n476 Amsterdam Ave (83rd St)\, New York\, NY 10024 \nHosts: Debi Unger & Deb Saat \nOpen to Members and Non-Members \nYou can order the book (Hardcover\, Kindle or Audiobook) and listen to an audio sample HERE. \nView Attendees HERE \n  URL:https://nyflyers.org/event/may-3rd-debs-book-club/ CATEGORIES:Social,Special Event ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://nyflyers.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/good-for-a-girl.png ORGANIZER;CN="Debi Unger":MAILTO:debiunger@hotmail.com END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20230501T090000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20230501T120000 DTSTAMP:20240328T212953 CREATED:20230309T174737Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230424T171001Z UID:21652-1682931600-1682942400@nyflyers.org SUMMARY:Flyers Pride Singlets DESCRIPTION:UPDATE.
