1990 - 1992: NY Flyers Bulletin and Newsletter

Tim Kennedy stepped down as president in the Fall of 1992 which led to the election in October 1992 of the first elected board — President: Jerry Flower, VP: Gordon Loh, Treasurer: Jonathan Federman, Secretary: Richard Garland and Member at Large: Sabina McGarrahan. The files from 1994 have gone missing, but most of 1993's were saved. Richard Garland did both the Bulletin (club news and events calendar) and Newsletter (articles and reports of races and major events) during this period. The first Member Profile, of Abdul-Krim Allam, written by Lisa Hamm appeared in the July 1993 Newsletter.

Heidi Chadwick consolidated the Bulletin and Newsletter and produced a lively monthly product. She started "FootNotes", a column of social happenings. She also introduced her delightful cartoons which we have enjoyed off and on for nearly 15 years. The October issue gave a moving response to a tragedy that occured in the Park shortly before.

Leslie Damasek continued the good work Heidi had begun, and introduced the column "Captain's Corner". She also managed to recruit Francine Alfandary as the FootNotes Editor, a position Francine has ably filled off and on (mostly on) to the present day. In the July issue she ran an article "THE GENESIS OF THE NEW YORK FLYERS" By Jonathan Buck, which is as worth while to read today as it was 15 years ago.

Tim Decker produced a very professional looking newsletter in a folded booklet format (and for the first 3 issues, was half sized: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"). On the internet front, in February, http://www.columbla.edu/-ae21 was given as the Flyer web site (on Ariella Evenzahav's account at Columbia) and Chris Mitchell was listed as Webmaster. In July, David Hoatson took over as Webmaster and in August, the web site was moved to http//www.nyflyers.org, where it remains today. And in the October issue, a complete report of the Flyers first Hood to Coast Relay written by each of the 12 runners for each of the relay's 36 legs.

In Jonathan Buck's 2nd year as president, the new secretary Sara Dzikiewicz began her 2 year stint as "Editrix" of the newsletter. The style was lively and intellegent, and she went on to win national honors from the RRCA for best newsletter for a medium sized club. In December, Barry Bunnell was named the new Webmaster, which was also when the newsletter began to appear on the NY Flyers web site (in full color) and became available as a download instead of a monochrome paper version to be mailed out. The newsletter — and the club — comes of age in the electronic era.

The Newsletter becomes electronic — and in full color. |
