WHY the Food Bank For New York City?

• According to 2007 figures from the US Census Bureau, 19% of New Yorkers (more than 1.5 million) live below the federal poverty line, approximately $17,000 for a family of three.
• Hunger continues to be a widespread problem in New York City, with 3.1 million New Yorkers relying on emergency food in 2007. This is a 55% increase from 2003.
• With the worsening of the recent financial crisis, donations continue to remain down and need is skyrocketing. The Flyers are responding to this humanitarian crisis in our own community through partnering with the Food Bank For New York City to organize a club-wide fundraising campaign.
• The Food Bank For New York City has been New York City’s key hunger-relief organization for over 25 years, distributing over 68 million pounds of food per year through over one thousand assistance programs. Beneficiaries include children, senior citizens, physically and mentally challenged New Yorkers, and the working poor.
• 96 cents of every dollar donated goes towards food acquisition, distribution and programs.
• Donations go directly to New Yorkers.

Is there a preferred method of donation?
Online donations are preferred. The Food Bank For New York City has established vendor relationships in place that make it easier for them to buy food at a substantially larger discount than individual food donors can achieve on their own. Is there a minimum donation?
No. Every dollar given is greatly appreciated and goes towards stemming the tide of hunger in New York City.

Can I donate food instead?
In 2008, this proved to be inefficient. The Flyers are not collecting food donations this year. Instead, we strongly encourage online donations.

How much are we trying to raise?
We set our goal at $3000 last year and beat it by over a thousand dollars. In 2009, we're raising our goal to $3500.

What will my donation buy?
Every dollar raised provides FIVE meals for needy New Yorkers. Meeting our goal of $3500 means that we as a club will provide 17,500 meals for the needy.

Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes!
